If it's short, you can use Microsoft Windows Sound Recorder to record any sound that's playing on your computer. Sound Recorder has a one-mainute recording limit. Works quite well. You'll find it under accessories/entertainment/sound recorder on Windows XP, and I think the location in Windows 98 is similar.
