I think that it would be a doable task to interpret Niebuhr to apply to either side equally as it is with other Christianity based existentialists. Indeed, many a philosophical project has resulted in a dual of words representing opposing positions with all the words coming from the same person.......with the exception of Kierkegaard because no one ever had any real idea what it was he was talking about.(:<))
