LOL! They are clever little rascals, and survival is always on their minds. There's a Far Side cartoon of a typical dachshund in a house late at night. He's standing in the darkened living room, observing as a huge, hideous, tentacled, one-eyed, fanged monster enters the house through a half-open window. He thinks to himself,

"Whoa!...Maybe I'll just pass on my usual barking frenzy."

Great cartoon! Our guys, Arnot & Valdy, had this technique mastered. When they were in the house alone and someone (possibly a stranger) arrived outside, they would not make a peep till they knew for sure who it was (could be someone dangerous, right?). But...if they had human backup in the house with them, they would raise the roof when anyone showed up, and act very, very brave, of course. :-)

If you're vacationing in Florida and have a dachshund, watch out for the alligators! Nothing they like better than a plump, juicy dachshund for a snack, and them gators can move fast.
