Check the thread discussion. The song has been around, I believe, since the early 1900's. I'm not sure when it was first translated. An old friend of my family, Winifred (Wendy) Holt collected a version in the early 1940's but I don't know much more about the details. The words, with the exception of two missing lines in the Holt copy, are exactly the same.
