Fort Constitution is on the coast of New Castle, next to Portsmouth. In December of 1774, when it was called Fort William and Mary, it was the site of the first action taken by colonists against the Crown.
In travelling north from Boston, you can stop in Salem MA where 19 innocents were murdered by Puritans in 1692. Plum Island, next to Newburyport MA is the site of a large bird sanctuary. There's another wildlife refuge in Newington NH on land that used to be part of an airbase.
At some point, I'll send you some of the websites for local historical sites.
