Subject: RE: Help? I'm a little lost...
I seem to recall that Vengaboys were Dutch????? and that due to different countries pronouncing letters differently it should "Sound like" Bengaboys.
Someone once said that "there's nothing new under the sun" - (can't recall who, and can't be bothered trying to track down a quote using Search Engines today.) This certainly follows for Music.
The rhythm of the Vengaboys "Boom Boom Boom" fits a style of dance music which appeared in about 1990 as TECHNO. Techno was mostly done using computerised Sequencers and drum machines. A number of Techno tunes got played on the radio, in particular, "No Limit" by "2 unlimited", and I decided that there was something about them which I liked. This surprised me as I had NEVER got into Disco music, which I usually found impossible to dance to.
Techno Bugged me for about a month, before I sussed out what the difference was. The underlying rhytm of Techno was a fairly brisk "Bum-diddy bum-diddy" type of beat. I was sat playing my Banjo, when it suddenly dawned on me that the Techno rhythm was almost identical the the rhythm of Clawhammer Banjo. I have since then used No Limits as a joke party piece when playing amongst Non-folkies (some day to be released on an LP entitled "Something to annoy almost everyone" alongside Duelling Banjo and Kazoo, Purple Haze, and Smoke on the Water......). Vengaboys may not realise it, but they have unwittingly become part of the "Folk Process".
Just a thought!
Quack!
