After consulting several travel sites on Goggle it seems clear to me that Jonah was ordered to go to "Nineveh" (might well have been folk processed to "inner land"), the ancient capital of the Assyrian Empire (near present day Mosul in occupied Iraq), one of the great enemies of the Nation of Israel at the time. No wonder he had misgivings! He is said to have embarked at Joppa (present day Jappa in Israel) for Tarshish but just where Tarshish was is not so clear. You can take your pick of almost any seaport in the Eastern Mediterranean. The island nation of Crete is one likely possibility, as is Turkey, Syria, Cyfrus and Atlantic Avenue in Brooklyn.
