Subject: RE: Standing in the Shadows of Motown
I saw the movie at an art house. I have spent forty years avoiding rock and pop music but this had me cheering in my seat. The pure talent and skills on display were overwhelming. My wife had to tell me who had recorded the various songs and I will find those recordings and catch up with the rest of the world. The Motown sound was a lot folkier than you think. It is rooted in Blues and Gospel. If Bluegrass is second generation folk, so is Rythem and Blues. I have recommended Standing in the Shadows of Motown in my column. Like Brother, Where Art Thou?, it is a clear over-the-shoulder glance at our musical roots.
