Maybe he wasn't really talking to God -- maybe his version of talking to God is telepathically linking to some lost, beaten, down-at-heel, pathetic, degraded, delusory leftover of a spirit who used to be, say, a wino in the Bowery, amd who drifted away from New York and his body on a cold winter night, leaving his mortal shell behind and ending up wandering aimlessly until he found himself babbling in Oral's ear.

If this is the case, as I suspect it is, he could hardly be expected to keep a portentous agreement, probably not even to remember one!
