If your IE got old enough to balk, it might be suspected that you haven't kept Windows up to date?

Now that you have an up to date IE, you'd be able to go to the Windows Update Site, where you can let them check for any updates you should have for your setup - and they're all free, although some of the recent ones are fairly large and can take a while to download and install.

There have been quite a few recent fixes that make surfing a lot safer.

Take a look when you have some time available.
