According to Meade et alia 'Country Music Sources' 'Dat's the way to spell chicken' came from Sidney Perrin/Bob Slater 1902. Under the title 'C-H-I-C-K-E-N that's the way to spell chicken', there were recordings by Arthur Collins (1902) and Len Spencer (1903). The first old-timey recording was by Sam and Kirk McGee in 1927.
