Lies can be comfortable and the truth can hurt and upset ones "world views". My brother Tim once commented something along the lines of "the Americans being friendly but the most brainwashed people he'd ever met".

This of course could not apply to all Americans but I do think that the fact that America is the most successful and powerful country in the world does create a "comfort zone" that Americans are reluctant to challenge.
