I once drove through two unincorporated places in Missouri. Traveling from east to west, I came upon the first town -- I don't remember the name, so call it Smithville. West Smithville, in fact.

Ten miles further west I came upon East Smithville.

There was no Smithville.

So West Smithville was east of East Smithville....
