Bystander, the Americans (allegedly) had the new electric three-speed phonographs from the late 40s, which were affordable to more people because of the higher standard of living, while we benighted Brits were still exporting essential products like whisky and cars to pay for the war damage we suffered (and the lease-lend tanks and ships!).

Noddy, when the 12" singles became popular in te late 70s, teer was some talk of bringing back the 78 for better sound quality (on vinyl, with microgroove & stereo). There may have been sone experimental ones pressed, but I've never heard of any being sold. All the ones I've got are definitely old!
