Thogh the Emcipation Proclaimation was signed in January, 1863, it was not until this day in 1865 did slaves in Texas learn of their freedom.

I'm not going to get into why it took Texas so long to free it's inslaved people but, this being June Teenth, would remind all of us that a great deal of America's wealth was created on the backs of people who were forcefully taken away from their homes and forced to work for absolutely nothing. The US Capital building and the White House, just for examples, were build by slaves.

I think it is fitting for all of us to take a moment not only to relect on the horrors of slavery but to also to reflect on just how much of what the US iswas built by slaves.

And its way past time for America to deal with its past.
