I am right with you on your sentiments, but it must be hard work to twist some of those lines to make rhythmic sense when you sing them. "Illegally" is a pretty adventurous rhyme for "valley". I would be tempted to play it for laughs - but that might defeat the object of the exercise. I would keep the chorus the same all the way through.
