The cat slept on the younger daughter's bed. As in many homes, there was no heat in the house at night in the winter, so this particular family opted for electric blankets.

The cat slept on the blanket. Anyone familiar with pets and electric blankets knows this isn't a good idea. Yep, the cat was coiled as a dead weight on the rumpled blanket. Smolder, smolder. Smoke! The cat woke up (maybe because a fire was starting under it), slapped the youngster on the face (claws in) until she woke up, then screamed as only a Siamese can, and woke the rest of the house. The cat chased her roommate to the front door and forced her outside, continuing to wail. The mother herded the older child outside while the father located the source of the smoke, unplugged the blanket and then doused the now-flaming bedding with water.

The blanket, and the mattress were destroyed, and there was much smoke damage to the room; but the child, and the rest of the family, was safe. The little girl was quite nauseated from the smoke and fumes, but lived to tell the tale. The cat, by the way, lived to a ripe old age, as mean as ever, but also still revered.
