Thread Name: Stanley Holloway - Monologues
Subject: Stanley Holloway - Monologues
Stanley Holloway was a famous British actor *My Fair Lady" etc. He was also associated with the monologue, some which he wrote but the more famous ones were written by Edgar Marriot. My favourites are the historical type, and top of that list, for me, come " The Battle of Hastings" and "The Magna Carter". Just to give a flavour of these, particularly for Americans, I'll quote from " The Magna Carter". Now, the signing of the carter ( or charter )by King John in 1215 (? )was an important date in English history as it led to a more democratic society - for some! The monologue ends with the barons tracking King John down to Runnymede Island where he is having a meal. Here are the final two verses:-
So they laid charter down on tea table,
and John signed his name like a lamb.
His writing in places was sticky and thick
through dipping his pen in the jam.

and it's 'cause of this here Magna Carter
that was signed by barons of old
that in England today we can do what we want
as long as we do what we're told!
