I am always amazed at how much spouses and significant others put up with regarding the obsessions of their mates -- there should be at least some reciprocity: I like Bob Marley, you like ballet, kind of thing, where you are dragged off kicking and screaming to stuff you don't really like at all. Of course the other question is whether your obsession says something unappealing about you that your significant other didn't realize at the outset, but which now really irritates or sums up all the things he/she dislikes about you. The tough thing is when your obsessions clash -- it is much easier if you can tap into them (e.g. get a mate who loves cooking). I cannot abide having radios or TVs on all the time, and I once had a girlfriend who was alone for a number of years and got used to having the radio on as a comfort. We had a hard time adjusting, and never really did. We tussled over dials like 7 year olds over the TV.
