       LA ROSE BLANCHE
       (The White Rose)

1. Early upon a summer's day,
    Early upon a summer's day,
I woke at break of dawn, so gay,
Just as the day was dawning.

2. Into the garden I made my way, (2)
To pluck a pretty rose, so gay,
    To pluck a prettyt rosebud.

3. As I was plucking the rose, so gay (2)
My lover came along that way,
    My lover came a-calling...

4. "Dear, will you pick me a fine bouquet? (2)
Of pretty roses, white and gay,
    Of roses, white abd pretty?"

5. As I was picking a fine bouquet, (2)
    I tripped--alas, and lack-a-day!
I tripped and broke my ankle.

6. "Go get the doctor quick, I say, (2)
    The city doctor, right away!
    The doctor from the city."

7. "Oh, dear doctor, tell me, pray, (2)
How shall I cure my ankle, say--
How shall I cure my ankle?"

8. "Into a golden bowl, I say, (2)
Put water and white roses gay,
    Put water and white roses.

9. "Then you must bathe your foot all day, (2)
And that, my dear's, the only way,
    To cure a broken ankle."
