Subject: RE: BS: V. Graham Norton -Can we snog after 9p in NYC?
Graham Norton an expert on UK slang?. Graham hails from Cork, Ireland. Or "Cock" as some Englanders pronounce it. Now "cock" that's another word that can cause embarrasing misunderstanding between English speakers on both sides of the Atlantic. Graham is one of those Paddies that, after a few years in London, has become more English than the Limeys themselves. I maintain that the word 'snog' both noun and verb, is of Hiberno-English origin (admittedly with no scholastic backup). It most definitely does not mean 'kissing' - even though kissing is an integral part of the process.

Kissing and cuddling - kissing and caressing - smooching - coorting - jagging - shifting - any of a wide ranging form of romantic low level sexual activity between members (usually but not always) of the opposite sex. This does NOT (and this point is important, Mudcatters) include any contact with the genital area. Now I am fully aware that such behaviour is just folklore to the younger generation unemcumbered as they are with the sexual guilts of their elders. But wasn't it a great way of avoiding unwanted pregnancies and unsocial medical complaints even if it did drive some of us completely bonkers. And what tremendous moral fibre the girls of that far off era displayed - not the lads, they never had any morals. "Oh no please!" she would breathlessly exclaim if his hands strayed too far, "don't spoil a lovely night". Ah! happy memories.
