When crediting Mort Shuman for Brel translations, don't forget his collaborator Eric Blau (husband of Elly Stone). It was Blau who first translated Brel into English for Stone, which ticked off Shuman, who believed only men should sing Brel's songs. Shuman came around after hearing Stone sing.

Blau's 1971 book, "Jacques Brel Is Alive and Well and Living in Paris," tells the story of how the show came to be, and includes the lyrics, both in English and French. They ran all the translations by Brel, knowing that while they could not keep the letter of the lyrics, they might retain the spirit.
