I agree, (so does Jon) that's it's far from a perfect translation but having worked on translating the odd song from the sephardic tradition I know just how hard it is to stay true to the original and still keep to the song style.
It was worth typing out however just to get the advice on typing accents (classic tecno-incompetant) thanks Steve

BTW a friend recently in an 'I saw this and thought of you' moment bought me a 2nd hand book of a biography of Brel by Alan Clayson which includes a chronology of compositions,
I particularly liked the introduction from Plutarch
