I don't think the wonderful first Harry Potter book is suitable for a 7-year-old child at all. Harry is 11 in the first book, and I think that's a good age for a child's introduction to the books. I just finished the 5th book in the series, and IMO, it shouldn't be read until the child is approximately 15 as well (Harry is 15 in the book).

For one thing, even the first book is too scary for a 7-year-old; in the second place, the kids get so much more out of these books when they are the right age for them.

I have them all for my grandson, who is 6. I'm just waiting a while.
