Devastated to hear that, Guest Learaí na Láibe. You've made me realise that it's many years since I was there last, before which I was there often.
It was always privately owned, as I recall. The last time there, the gates were open and being slightly pushed for time, we drove right down to the head, passing two guys painting railings, who paused to wave and smile. When we passed them on the way out they waved and smiled again. When we got back to the gate it was locked. Rather than face the two painters, my chum tried to open the gate at the other end, by lifting it off its hinges. It didn't work, and he finished up covered in paint, the gate having just been given a fresh coat.
We went back to the painters who were of course waiting for us, but so apparently busy with their work that they managed to ignore us for several minutes. Eventually one of them pointed out that we were trespassing. We pointed out that we would be delighted to stop trespassing, and some haggling ensued. Eventually it was agreed that I would drive one of them up to the gate to unlock it on condition that my passenger took his place painting the railings. Their ingenuity found one or two more ways to exploit the situation before they at last took pity and released us, and we parted on the best of terms.
We were bang out of order that day of course, but it is surely a crime to deny public access to so spectacular a peninsula. I hope all their golf balls go over the cliffs.
Anyway, sorry to run away with your thread, Greg. Glad you're enjoying the trip. Don't see how you could have failed to.
