When I was the folksinger on a Mississippi River stemboat, we used to use our anchor as a fish hook. Bated it with an entire SOW. When the fish dtruck the pilot always yelled down the tube to get full steam ahead or the damn monster would've hauled ua all the way down to New Orleans and out to sea. We were just holding our own when the fish got stuck sideways in the river. It had it's head wedged against the state of Iowa and it's tail was held firm against the state of Illinois's shore. The water started backing up behind that fish like there was a dam throwed across there. If the fish had moved, all that water would'a broke free and deluged all the towns downstream. So the Army Corpse o' Engineers built a real dam there just in case.-------------- Eventually that catfish rotted away and was washed into the Gulf Of Mexico. But the dam is still there. Visual PROOF that the tale is true .
