Thread Name: Lyr Add: The Leather Queen (not wot U Think!)
Subject: Lyr Add: THE LEATHER QUEEN (not wot U Think!)
Heres something I found recently, I can't find an authour/writer locally, But I gues it was written by one of the ship yard workers at Swan Hunters, on the Banks of the River Tyne, at Wallsend, probably in the late 70s (no such staff would be employed these days, gloves get chucked, aprons too, and a warm coat from the bosses stores is just a dream!)

THE LEATHER QUEEN:

She sits in splendour all alone,
Like Cleopatra on her throne.
And navigates an old machine;
She's Swan & Hunter's 'Leather Queen'.

She'll stitch your clove or mend your cape.
Or put your apron back in shape;
There is no charge, she sends no bill,
If you need gloves, just ask for Lil.

Her place of work is near the store,
There's heaps of leather on the floor,
And there, amid this busy scene,
Is Lilly Gloves, 'The Leather Queen'

There's always plenty work to do,
Repairing old, or making new,
And welders queue outside her door,
From early morn till half past four.

And there behind her bench she sits,
And patches aprons, gloves and mitts,
She gives you service with a smile,
And leather in the latest style.

And when you feel that winter chill,
Do not despair, just go to Lil,
And if you're working on the boat,
She'll fit you with a leather coat.

And if it ever came to pass,
That we should loose out 'Leather Lass',
You'd see production figures fall,
For soon we'd have no gloves at all.

So Swan & Hunter please take note,
And listen to this humble poet:
If you want progress to be seen,
Look after Lil, 'The Leather Queen'.
