Based on no evidence at all, I would guess the proportions in both countries is about the same: I can't see any particular reason why it should be different. On the other hand, if you ask a person who has owned a guitar for a few months whether they play it seriously, I think the American culture would tend to encourage them to say 'yes', and the British culture to say 'no'.
