Association for Cultural Equity (ACE) - Alan Lomax (Recordings, too) |
http://www.culturalequity.org/ |
Online Media |
The Association for Cultural Equity (ACE),
housed at the Fine Arts Campus of New York
City's Hunter College, was chartered as a
charitable organization in the State of New
York in 1983. It was founded by Alan Lomax
to explore and preserve the world's
expressive traditions with humanistic
commitment and scientific engagement. Alan
Lomax was a musicologist, writer and
producer who spent his life capturing in
sound, photographs, video and research what
today is termed our "intangible heritage."
The central value of his career was the
promotion of cultural equity as the need
for every culture to express and develop
its distinctive heritage, believing it
should be recognized as a fundamental human
right. His "Appeal for Cultural Equity"
anticipated by decades UNESCO's 2003
declaration to safeguard intangible oral
heritage.

John Quincy Wolf Collection Ozark Folk Songs |
http://web.lyon.edu/wolfcollection/ |
Online Media |
John Quincy Wolf began collecting Ozark
ballads while an undergraduate at Arkansas
(now Lyon) college. His first serious
professional interest in Ozark folksongs
dates Old Settlers Music Festivalfrom his
attendance at the Old Settler's folk music
festival at Blanchard Springs in 1941. He
and his wife Bess began to seek out
folksingers in the White River and
surrounding areas, often placing
advertisements in local newspapers for
people who knew "old songs."
Wolf recorded hundreds of Ozark folksingers
between 1952 and 1963, including Almeda
Riddle, Neal Morris, Oscar and Ollie
Gilbert, and Jimmy Driftwood. He observed
how many of these singers would add their
own adaptations to songs, and chronicled
this in "Folksingers and the Re-Creation of
Folksong" in Western Folklore.
The Wolf Folksong Collection at Lyon
College contains hundreds of recordings.
Transcriptions are being added to this
online collection weekly.

KRAB Radio, Seattle - 1962-84 archive |
http://www.krab.fm |
Online Media |
Hello,
KRAB was a radio station in Seattle between
1962 and 1984. A couple of
years ago I took on the project of building
an online archive of audio
and other ephemera from the remains of
KRAB. Part of my work is
reaching out to former program producers,
volunteers and listeners in
pursuit of possible recordings or other
material they might have hung on
to since those days. That is what brought
me to mudcat. A search turned
up several people that have mentioned KRAB
in their posts, and John
Ross, of course, was a volunteer at KRAB as
well as KBOO.
Would you also consider adding the archive
to mudcat's list of links?
The URL is www.krab.fm. We have almost 400
hours of audio, 300 program

Max Hunter Folk Song Collection |
http://maxhunter.missouristate.edu/ |
Online Media |
A collection of hundreds of folk songs collected by Max Hunter, mainly in the Ozarks of Arkansas and Missouri. Each song is on a page containing the lyrics. Virtually all of them contain buttons that allow you to hear the original field recording in RealAudio or using an AIFF file. Some pages also contain transcriptions onto a staff, and you can push a button to play these transcribed songs in MIDI.
"The Max Hunter Collection is an archive of almost 1600 Ozark Mountain folk songs, recorded between 1956 and 1976. A traveling salesman from Springfield, Missouri, Hunter took his reel-to-reel tape recorder into the hills and backwoods of the Ozarks, preserving the heritage of the region by recording the songs and stories of many generations of Ozark history. As important as the songs themselves are the voices of the Missouri and Arkansas folks who shared their talents and recollections with Hunter. Designed to give increased public access to this unique and invaluable resource, this site is a joint project of the Southwest Missouri State University Department of Music and the Springfield-Greene County Library in Springfield, Missouri, where the permanent collection is housed." A righteous amateur collector and kindred spirit of Vance Randolph and Quincy Wolf.

The Black Gospel Music Restoration Project |
http://www.baylor.edu/lib/gospel/ |
Online Media |
The purpose of this project is to identify,
acquire, preserve, record and catalogue the
most at-risk music from the black gospel
music tradition. This will primarily
include 78s, 45s, LPs, and the various tape
formats issued in the United States and
abroad between 1945 and 1970. Additionally,
any ephemera that may be of use to scholars
-- including PR photos and press packets,
taped interviews, informal photographs,
tour books and programs, newspaper and
magazine clippings, and sheet music -- will
also be acquired as it becomes available.
The ultimate goal is to have a copy of
every song released by every black gospel
artist or group during that time period.
