The John and Ruby Lomax 1939 Southern States Recording Trip Collection is now available online through the Library of Congress American Memory Web site. This multiformat ethnographic field collection includes 686 sound recordings, as well as photographic prints, fieldnotes, dust jackets, and other manuscripts documenting folksingers and folksongs during a three-month, 6,502-mile trip through eight Southern states.

Interesting studies of American musicians of all genres.

The Cumberland Trio originated at the University of Tennessee in 1962 and won the National Collegiate Folk Festival in Jacksonville, FL in 1963. The Trio made three appearances on the ABC-TV Hootenanny prime time Saturday night Folk Music Series in 1964, and performed concerts at colleges and universities across the nation. A 23 song CD of their music, mostly recorded in 1964 at RCA in Nashville, TN, produced by Chet Atkins, was released in October, 2001 and is available on their above website. The Trio disbanded in 1965 as a result of bad luck on their recording contract as well as the effect the British Invasion-Beatles et al- had on the sales of folk recordings. Mike Kirkland of the original Brothers Four has stated that The newly released Cumberland Trio CD, digitally remastered from their previously unreleased recordings is terrific folk music and as good as anything recorded in the folk era of the '60s. The Trio performed a Reunion Concert November 9, 2001 before an entusiastic packed house at the historic Bijou Theatre Center in Knoxville, TN, which will be released on digital Video, DVD & CD in March of 2002. The original group reunited in 2001 and is performing selectively at concert halls and music festivals througout the Southeastern U S.

Penny Black

"Getting on a bit and think they're worth something" was how Radio Lancashire described this Lancashire Comic folk group (they are serious sometimes!) - and they weren't far wrong, the lads that make-up Penny Black have been around the folk scene since the late 50's.
John Bond fronts the group with his comic (some might say risque) songs and poems and is joined by Pete Skinner (vocals/banjo etc), and Barrie Parker (upright bass and melodian).
Sometimes - when they can't get Barrie out of the rest home - Pete and John appear as a duo - and were introduced at Fylde Folk Festival as "two thirds of a duo" - which they still haven't worked out.
Pop along to the web site and have a laugh - yes there are pictures!

In The Netherlands more amateur musicians are playing folk and Gipsy music of East European Countries than in any other West European Country. Many years ago I started my home page Cimbalom as a Dutch platform for these musicians and their colleagues in other countries. During recent years I have collected a large number of Hungarian melodies from various sources and described these as a single voice MIDI file. The purpose of this collection of over 5000 melodies (MIDI's), in majority of (Urban) Hungarian Folk music, or in fact in majority Magyar Nóta, but including some 1700 Népdalok, is to promote these melodies among devotees, and to contribute to the preservation of this type of Folk music. A vast collection of manuscripts and recordings - songs and stories.

Emerald Rose plays Celtic traditional songs in a modernized, pop fusion manner, and writes original tunes inspired by Celtic myth and legend. Rich vocal harmonies, driving guitar, pennywhistle, and percussion give a strong "rock 'n reel" sound. Their most recent CD, "Bending Tradition", is in the top 10 Emerging Artists/Celtic selections on Amazon.com, and the original song "Freya, Shakti" has been in the top 20 Pop category on MP3.com.

FINNEGAN is a band playing irish folk music, located outside Cologne/Germany and recording their 1st CD. The page consists of their story, concert dates, description, guestbook and more (german and english versions).

Lyrics for almost 400 Irish songs.

This site also has a lyrics archive with some 400 song lyrics. In their words, "A collection of Irish themed midi songs ranging from political to humourous, some sad, some happy, all good! Some songs have several midi versions available." Many of the MIDI files appear to have come from Mudcatter Barry Taylor's Traditional Tunebook.

Celebrating culture and heritage is plenty of fun for Irish families when they get together for a reunion. Ireland has a rich history of arts, music, dance, mythology, and cuisine. By introducing some of these aspects in a family reunion, it is a wonderful way of passing down parts of one’s heritage to the next generation. Many people in the U.S. have Irish ancestry. Even if you have not been to Ireland, there is still plenty you can do to celebrate the culture. Check it out in the Guinness book of hit singles! His children don’t really know what to make of it! He’s also toured the country with his legendary stage shows, with capacity crowds at every venue. His latest show with The Richard Cartridge Band is “The Rock and Roll Years”, humorous observations, recollections and music from a kid who grew up in the Fabulous 50’s, Swinging’ 60’s and Sensational 70’s!!! The production includes live performances of songs from his current album, “You Never Can Tell” He was commissioned by the American computer giant, Silicon graphics, to co- produce, script and host a number of presentations to introduce the first virtual reality platforms (CGI) to the United Kingdom and Europe. These were seen by professionals from various disciplines. Film and television, computer aided design and the manufacturing industry. The set was inspired by Pink Floyd's "The Wall", and the presentations were illustrated live on five screens. They took the show on the road to the major exhibition halls of London, Birmingham, Brussels and Geneva.

Zemerl was like a Digital Tradition of Jewish song in Yiddish, Ladino, and Hebrew - with recordings and MIDI files available for some songs. Now the Website is in another language - it appears to be Indonesian - but it is still about Jewish music. If anybody knows what happened to Zemerl, please let Joe Offer know - joe@mudcat.org
