Subject: Celtic Symphony - Wolfe Tones - Lyrics?? From: bobemethelis@jungle.net Date: 08 Jul 99 - 02:19 PM Would someone be able to post the words to the Wolfe Tones' classic "Celtic Symphony" We have heard it played at every W-T concert - and everyone sings along except us. Just cannot make out the words! |

Subject: RE: Celtic Symphony - Wolfe Tones - Lyrics?? From: Paddy Date: 10 Aug 99 - 02:01 PM I've got two WT songbooks, but the "Symphony" isn't in either of them. The line in the chorus that audiences seem to sing most enthusiastically is "ooh, ah, up da ra, say ooh, ah, up da ra." The words "up da ra" are generally thought to mean "Up the IRA". |
Subject: RE: Celtic Symphony - Wolfe Tones - Lyrics?? From: Big Mick Date: 11 Aug 99 - 02:32 AM I have looked through everything I have and don't find it. I will have to wait until I have time and take the lyrics of the CD. I will try to get to it in the next few days. Mick |
Subject: RE: Celtic Symphony - Wolfe Tones - Lyrics?? From: Len Wallace Date: 12 Aug 99 - 02:29 AM I will try and get the lyrics. I often play with a trio called "The Diggers" and it's a song we sometimes do, though I am not the lead singer in it. It is a rocking song. And indeed the call "Oo ah, up the RA! Oo ah up the RA!, does refer to the IRA. The Wolfe Tones make particular mention of this during their concerts when some people were singing "Oo ah, up their ass" Many of the lyrics are good. I especially like the take on the lion sleeping in the jungle deep, since it I believe it refers to the old African liberation song, "Wimoweh". Rather mystical tune all in all. I would get the lyrics posted ASAP. Len Wallace |

Subject: RE: Celtic Symphony - Wolfe Tones - Lyrics?? From: Marki Date: 12 Aug 99 - 06:26 PM This is for "Paddy". I noticed you said that you have two Wolfe Tone songbooks.... Mind if I ask where one can get such a thing? Irish songbooks are rare here (Canada), and I've never come close to seeing a Wolfe Tones one! |
Subject: RE: Celtic Symphony - Wolfe Tones - Lyrics?? From: Big Mick Date: 12 Aug 99 - 08:44 PM They can be purchased from Elderly Instruments in Lansing, Michigan. CLICK HERE to go to the page of their website that has these books. You will have to scroll to the bottom of the page if it isn't already there. They have a secure site to order from. Subject: RE: Celtic Symphony - Wolfe Tones - Lyrics?? From: Date: 12 Aug 99 - 08:55 PM Up the Ra' does signify support for the P-Ira, but the references to the jungle are to do with the now demolished terrace in Parkhead, Cletic F.C.'s ground. The references to the Lions are not African Music, the Lisbon Lions, the European Cup winning team of 1966, and their memory. Its that simple. |

Subject: RE: Celtic Symphony - Wolfe Tones - Lyrics?? From: Paddy Date: 12 Aug 99 - 11:38 PM Marki - Big Mick's response should solve your problem. I picked them up @ McCulloch-Piggots in Dublin a few years ago. If you strike out w/ Mick's lead, come back and I'll send you the publisher data. You've never really seen a WT show untill you see one w/ an Irish audience. It's a vastly different experience than any I've seen here in FL. I think that they exemplify the ancient bardic tradition and truly educate and inform their audiences about Irish history. Great guys off stage as well. |
Subject: RE: Celtic Symphony - Wolfe Tones - Lyrics?? From: Celtic-End Singer Date: 13 Aug 99 - 09:09 PM Celtic actually won the European Cup in 1967, beating Internazionale Milan 2-1 in the finalin Lisbon. Gemmil and Chalmers scored the goals after Celtic conceded a first-half penalty goal. |
Subject: RE: Celtic Symphony - Wolfe Tones - Lyrics?? From: Celtic-End Singer Date: 13 Aug 99 - 09:12 PM By the way, does anyone know when the Wolfe Tones next come to Glasgow, or where I can get tour info? I've never seen them live and would love to experience it all. |
Subject: RE: Celtic Symphony - Wolfe Tones - Lyrics?? From: Big Mick Date: 13 Aug 99 - 10:28 PM Jazus, CES, but you will enjoy the lads. They are marvelous in concert, consumate performers. And no one can sing a ballad like Tommy. If you want to get on the good side of Derek, offer to take him to a used book store. He is a gentleman and a true scholar and he loves old bookshops. I do too. Once about 10 years ago, the lads came to Grand Rapids for a concert. Derek asked me if I knew of any good used bookstores. I did and we spent the afternoon happily brousing the shelves. And I learned more Irish history in that afternoon, than I ever had before. Great time. All the best, Mick |
Subject: RE: Celtic Symphony - Wolfe Tones - Lyrics?? From: Marki Date: 16 Aug 99 - 02:34 PM Thanks Big Mick & Paddy. You've been a great help. And yes, I'd love to see the Wolfe Tones live, but you know, the only Irish music ever playing live here is things like "Riverdance" which isn't exactly my idea of Irish music. I guess I'll have to make a trip over to Ireland one of these years.... Anyway, thanks again for your assistance. I really appreciate it! |

Subject: RE: Celtic Symphony - Wolfe Tones - Lyrics?? From: Mrrzy Date: 07 Dec 01 - 12:30 PM OK, but what is this song ABOUT? Why are the weak waltzing with the natives, in particular? Is this the Irish equivalent of The Devil Went Down to Georgia? |
Subject: RE: Celtic Symphony - Wolfe Tones - Lyrics?? From: Dicho (Frank Staplin) Date: 07 Dec 01 - 12:51 PM I presume the natives are the Lisbonites? I imagine the Celtic supporters had a bit of a howl there! |
Subject: RE: Celtic Symphony - Wolfe Tones - Lyrics?? From: Hillheader Date: 07 Dec 01 - 02:16 PM "The Natives" are the Scots supporters of Celtic Football Club. On the old terraces where you could stand rather than the sanitised (but much safer) seats we have now at Celtic Park there was frequently dancing if Celtic scored. Incidently have seen the Wolfe Tones twice - once in Dublin in a pub that was so full we sat on ledges at the back of the seats and the seats themselves were taken. and once in Motherwell Civic Centre near Glasgow. To say they play to their audience is an understatement -- they are brilliant live. There rendition of "Joe McDonnell" has the audience eating from the palm of their hand. Well worth a listening, but not for monarchists!! Davebhoy |
