Subject: Is something wrong with the midi files?
From: Richard Bridge

I just went to the database to refresh my memory of the tune of Spencer the rover and it wouldn't play. Nor would a couple of others. But all my other sound functions on my computer seem to be working. Is it the database or is it me?

MIDIs seem to be working normally, Richard. I don't know what it is, but it seems that people have a lot of problem with MIDI, and with sound in general. I think it's because there are so many different programs nowadays that play sounds, and some of them conflict. The worst offender I've found is Crescendo. If you have it, it might be an idea to uninstall it and see if that does the trick.

Just FYI Joe, I had a period of time when all I could get when I wanted to play a midi in the DT was a box wanting me to save the thing. I tried just for S and G's the other day and it went right to a tune, no saving or anything, just like it used to!

Yep, what Banjer says is true for me, too. I couldn't see the point of complaining when I could open the tune and play it later, but the files are now back to normal for me. (and probably screwed for Richard at the same time).
Blessings,
Barbara

worked fine for me yesterday

Perhaps, it may be related to temporary files and a "wash-out" date i.e. the user's file area is full until it is "automatically" dumped at pre-determined date.

I know this may be a dumb question, but ... I've tried to listen to the MIDI files, but don't have what I need to play them. I do have speakers and my computer makes sound, but i don't know what software I need to be able to play them. Do I need to buy something, or is it safe to download something from the 'net and if so, what's the best thing to get and how do I get it?

If this has been answered before, just steer me to the thread, please.

KC,what happens when you click on the "CLICK HERE TO PLAY" line in a song you've looked up online here?

Usually, if you can't play the MIDI files direct from the database, you can at least download them by right-clicking on the "click to play" link and choosing to download. then you should be able to double-click on the MIDI and play it, unless your computer is really messed up. Windows comes with a MIDI player, and I think the Mac operating system does, too.
Click here to download the latest version of Windows Media Player. If you install it, it will usually overwrite all the goofed-up software you have and make things work properly.

I can play them, but for some reason I can't save them. I'm unhappy about that, 'cause I want to print out some songs........

Well, Margarita, it took me a while to learn that the MIDI file ended up automatically in my Netscape user cache with some fascinating informative name like M0ho0ecl (1KB MIDI sequence), which when I click on it turns out to be Spencer the Rover.
To get to the cache, I had to click on Programs in my Start Up menu, 2.Windows Explorer, 3. Program Files, 4. Netscape, 5. Users, 6. Millikan (my user name) and 7. cache.
Piece of cake, hey?
Anyway, find your browser's cache, and the file should be there automatically saved with all the other cr .. stuff you looked at in the last month or so.
Blessings,
BArbara

Still mute for me in media player.

I have an alter identity too and use netscape for that. THat fires up crescendo. Still mute.

I also have realplayer G2, but have not worked out how to get the browsers to use it. Perhaps I should go and find those caches and try again. Back later.....

Oh. Well, the LAST time I tried, I got nuttin' -- now, however, it's chirping away. I did download the Windows Media Player, just for good measure.

Must be changing your name that made the MIDI files work, Wyo. The possibility of anything else making a difference would be just too weird. All you people who have MIDI problems, change your names, and everything will be ok. That's how they fix things that don't work in government and business - they just change the names, and everything is OK.

It's probably the change in cyberpersonalities. A different vibe now.

there are half a dozen things which could prevent one from hearing the sounds they want...*sigh*..something as simple as having the 'mute' button on in your sound program...you just have to become familar with it all.

Margarita...in most midi situations, you must save them as a different operation than playing them...that is..when you see the 'click here to play' label...right click and follow the directions (after deciding WHERE you are goona save it!..[some lose things because they don't designate a directory])...or, you can hold down the shift key as you do the standard left click. Either way you ought to get a menu that asks you where to save it..but once it is playing..(as in Crescendo)..you cannot save it from there.

Crescendo does in fact have a save option when the tune is playing. Version 4.0 seems to be having some problems with explorer 5 (I haven't had any) - but there are instructions at liveupdate.com as to what to do if you have problems with Crescendo and IE 5.

Aside from that - There's a good page at troubleshooting midi here (http://www.cabelov.com/midi/miditrbs.shtml)

It's where I send people nowadays when they have problems - and I don't seem to be getting them back (could be because they think I'm mean for not helping them myself though!)

Lesley N., thanks for the referral to my site! I sure hope I'm helping people even though I haven't updated the site in a while. Ego boosts are always appreciated.

Charles - I'm not sure I did you a favor! If you're getting one tenth of the messages I did, you'd be cursing me. I once tried to help a woman for more than a week - several messages a day and it turned out her speakers weren't plugged in to her sound card! I wouldn't have minded except one of the first things I'd sent was "check all connections". She did apologize though - and it probably took her some nerve to admit that's what was wrong!

So don't thank me for the referral - I'm always glad to pass troubles on! Seriously - I think you did a great job.

Gee, Lesley, I didn't think of that. I've been sending people to your site to test their MIDI-playing ability if it wasn't working at the 'Cat. I didn't think they'd be swamping you with e-mail. Oh, well, maybe it will keep you from having nothing to do and committing horrible crimes out of sheer boredom and ending up in jail or something. See how good I am to you?
