Subject: 'Marie Claire'?/Lyric req
From: Tom B
Date: 13 Sep 99 - 08:50 PM

I have been trying to find this song since I first heard it on the radio in 1987, without success. It seems the title might be Marie Claire (pronounced "MariClaire" in the song).

It's about a writer/songwriter/poet who talks about this apparently fetching young girl named Marie Claire, and he's a bit jealous and bitter about the fact that she won't hang with him, and instead passes her time with Russian counts in her Paris apartment, with nice bedsheets, and a few other nice details that I now forget...It had kind of a Jacque Brel sound to it, a nice melody, probably 15 verses. I awoke to a radio station in Madrid to this song hearing half of it in my sleep, but I really liked it a lot; it was followed by Love Chronicles by Al Stewart which I also liked.

I would split my pants if someone could direct me to the source of this song...

Could it be "Where Do You Go To(My Lovely)", by Peter Sarstedt? ("You talk like Marlene Dietrich /and you dance like Zizi Jeanmaire...")

Recorded on his eponymous 1969 album on United Artists.

Malcolm, my friend, you did it! That's it! I'm ecstatic! Is the rest of the record worth listening to? I never heard of the guy...Can you say any more about the record? Of course I'll go off and try to locate it myself; I'll have to buy it because I can't quite remember the melody, but I just loved the way it worked! Do you know the lyrics? Do you have the record? (Does anyone know the lyrics?)

Dang nabit! Where else could I go but to mudcat to get this question answered? I'm sure jeeves wouldn't have a clue...

I've had the record so long that it's in mono! I'm afraid I have no idea if it's available on CD, but the original number was ULP 1219. As I remember, I only liked about half the songs, but of course others may love them all. I really must get back to work now, but will try to post the lyrics for you this evening (UK time).

Subject: Lyr Add: WHERE DO YOU GO TO (MY LOVELY) (Sarstedt)
From: Malcolm Douglas

Where Do You Go To My Lovely

You talk like Marlene Dietrich
And you dance like ZiZi JeanMaire
Your clothes are all made by Balmain
And there's diamonds and pearls in your hair
Yes there are.

You live in a fancy apartment
Off the Boulevard Saint Michel
Where you keep your Rolling Stones records
And a friend of Sacha Distel
Yes you do.

You go to the Embassy parties
Where you talk in Russian and Greek
And the young men who move in your circle
They hang on every word you speak
Yes they do.

But where do you go to my lovely
When you're alone in your bed
Tell me the thoughts that surround you
I want to look inside your head
Yes I do.

I've seen all your qualifications
You got from the Sorbonne
And the painting you stole from Picasso
Your loveliness goes on and on
Yes it does.

When you go on your summer vacation
You go to Juan-Les-Pins
With your carefully designed topless swimsuit
You get an even sun-tan
On your back and on your legs.

And when the snow falls you're found in St. Moritz
With the others of the jet set
And you sip your Napoleon brandy
But you never get your lips wet
No you don't.

But where do you go to my lovely
When you're alone in your bed
Tell me the thoughts that surround you
I want to look inside your head
Yes I do.

You're in between 20 and 30
A very desirable age
Your body is firm and inviting
But you live on a glittering stage
Yes you do, yes you do.

Your name it is heard in high places
You know the Aga Khan
He sent you a racehorse for Christmas
And you keep it just for fun, for a laugh,
Yes you do, ha ha ha

They say when you get married
It'll be to a millionaire
But they don't realise where you came from
And I wonder if they really care
Or give a damn.

But where do you go to my lovely
When you're alone in your bed
Tell me the thoughts that surround you
I want to look inside your head
Yes I do.

I remember the back streets of Naples
Two children begging in rags
Both touched with a burning ambition
To shake off their lowly born tags
They tried...

So look into my face Marie-Claire
And remember just who you are
Then go and forget me forever
But I know you still bear the scar
Deep inside.

I know where you go to my lovely
When you're alone in your bed
I know the thoughts that surround you
'Cause I can look inside your head.

Peter Sarstedt, 1969. Published by Mortimer Music, London.

The song was very successful in the UK Singles Charts at the time. The follow-up, "Frozen Orange Juice" (why on earth do I remember that?) did ok, but was, so far as I know, his last hit. He made at least 2 solo albums (WDYGTML comes from his first) and I seem to remember him recording, later on, with his brother Clive (the Singer Formerly Known As Eden Kane).

Later. I've had a quick look at Amazon.com, and it turns out that there's a compilation CD of some of Sarstedt's songs available: entitled (surprise!) "Where Do You Go To My Lovely". How about that?

got it! Cool! I may have to order it as the exact melody is a bit fuzzy. I'm gonna check around the used record shops. Thanks a zillion, Malcolm!

This is a bit nostalgic. I have a Peter Sarstedt 45 rpm extended play with 'Where Do You Go To' - it is the only 45 extended play (or 45 period) I ever bought - monaural United Artists UAX-11597. I bought it because I loved the song and I can't recall liking anything else he did. The other 3 on the ext play 45 are 'My Daddy Is a Millionaire', 'I Am a Cathedral' and 'Morning Mountain', all by Sarstedt. I no longer have any idea what they were like, nor any ability to play the record.

So nice to see such an interest in this fabulous song. The track was the inspiration for my name. My mum and dads friend still sings it in a local band. Seems to have gained some recent popularity with the film Darjeeling Limited, as it was used in the short before the actual film! Peter Starsted's other track I enjoy is Boulevard!
Over and out, Marie-Claire

Have to say that I saw Peter Sarstedt live a few months ago at a local folk venue and I was somewhat disappointediew at his style these days and his guitar playing seemed very poor on the night.

I don't think it was just me having a bad night as I had a few friends with me that night and they all seemed to take the same view.

Sorry Sarstedt fans but that's how I saw it.

Still like that song though.

The other song which comes to mind is "Beirut - (Crumbling Stone by Stone)". I briefly worked with Peter back in the 80s when he admitted that WDYGTML took him all of ten minutes to write - some songs are like that! As to his guitar playing, I got the impression that he wasn't playing much even in those days - he turned up with a Martin 12 string he'd hired specifically for the gig.

Searching like mad for an album with this track on (among others) it was a compilation album called something like... Songwriters and their songs. Has anyone any ideas? Other tracks were Chris De Burgh - Satin Green Shutters, Steve Miller Band - Abracadabra.

Any help tracing this would be amazing many thanks.
Jo

Maybe, Grishka, but you weren't there at the time. Simply telling it like it was. Just Peter, his wife and myself in the car.

Starts @ 41 minutes in. Looks like he was playing a Levin with a replaced pickguard.

Ray, I do not doubt your report, I just want to point out that anyone who says "I wrote a world hit in ten minutes" is not admitting anything.

We had another thread about this song a couple of months ago with some more discussions.
