Subject: RE: lyric req From: Noreen Date: 30 Mar 01 - 10:07 AM Hi, banjo-flower- I've looked all over for this- with various spellings, too- but no success. I know someone who I think sings this one- I could find out if you have no luck here. Noreen |
Subject: RE: lyric req From: Sorcha Date: 30 Mar 01 - 10:56 AM (pssst...just a note here): It really helps if you put the song title or lyric snippet in the thread title. That way, folks who know the song are more likely to check it out. Have you read The FAQ? First thread on the main forum page, it's teal, and will really help you a lot. |
Subject: RE: lyric req From: Sorcha Date: 30 Mar 01 - 11:02 AM All I can find is booking info for a UK (Lancashire maybe) group called Trouble at Mill, which sings it. |
Subject: RE: lyric req From: GUEST,banjo-flower Date: 30 Mar 01 - 03:04 PM thanks sorcha for your tip will try if i get no joy, P.S what is teal |
Subject: RE: lyric req From: Giac Date: 30 Mar 01 - 03:29 PM Hi, banjo-flower --
Since I can't answer the music question, I'll try your last query. Teal is the color of the first two thread titles on the forum:
Mudcat FAQ ... The FAQ thread is full of useful, amusing and amazing info, check it out. |
Subject: RE: lyric req From: wdyat12 Date: 31 Mar 01 - 03:29 PM Teal is one of my favorite colors now. It has definetly replaced Day-Glo Green from the seventies and Avacado from the fifties. I will be watching this thread or a new one you may post. Sounds like a fun song. wdyat12 |
Subject: RE: lyric req - ee by gum From: Greyeyes Date: 31 Mar 01 - 03:42 PM I have drawn a blank on the net and at work. The spelling could be a problem. |
Subject: RE: LYR REQ Ee By Gum But I'm Cold From: GUEST Date: 31 Mar 01 - 05:40 PM Spelling could be "Eeh ba gum bur ah'm cowd" |
Subject: RE: LYR REQ Ee By Gum But I'm Cold From: Bernard Date: 31 Mar 01 - 05:55 PM Chorus:
Ee, by gum, bur'ahm cowd Eddie Crotty wrote many of Fivepenny Piece's songs - 'Big Jim' and 'I'm Powfagged' were other 'gems'... I'll have a think about it, and post the rest of the words when I've remembeed the odd missing line... |
Subject: RE: LYR REQ Ee By Gum But I'm Cold From: wdyat12 Date: 31 Mar 01 - 10:51 PM My God! This is how I live here in Maine. I need the music to this one for sure. wdyat12 |

Subject: RE: LYR REQ Ee By Gum But I'm Cold From: Bernard Date: 03 Apr 01 - 07:50 PM I've not forgotten - well I have, erm, you know what I mean!! I've got people digging around for old 5p records or books... any time now!! |
Subject: RE: LYR REQ Ee By Gum But I'm Cold From: Bernard Date: 08 Apr 01 - 01:30 PM A breakthrough! Suddenly the penny dropped! An old mate of mine (Bernard Wrigley) joined Fivepenny Piece in 1995 and now gigs with them. I've emailed him (we were at school together), so watch this space!! |
Subject: RE: LYR REQ Ee By Gum But I'm Cold From: GUEST,Banjo-Flower Date: 08 Apr 01 - 02:09 PM Thanks a lot Bernard will keep an eye on it |
Subject: Lyr Add: EEE BY GUM From: bradfordian Date: 08 Apr 01 - 05:42 PM Banjo-flower, here's the words I use (don't forget the accent) EEE BY GUM
CHORUS: Eee by gum but I'm cowd, eee by gum but I'm cowd
Old Jonathan Pratt were a gradely chap, an' 'e liked a pint of ale
Oh a glass at night were 'is great delight, for it warmed 'im up y' know
Then Jonathon finally met his match with a yard of ale they say So are 5p still performing? Regards Baz |
Subject: RE: LYR REQ Ee By Gum But I'm Cold From: Bernard Date: 09 Apr 01 - 10:29 AM Yes - they 're-formed' in 1995, and asked Bernard Wrigley to join. It's a 'part-time' arrangement, according to what gigs are planned. I'll post more when I know... |
Subject: Lyr Add: EE BY GUM BUT I'M COWD From: Bernard Date: 10 Apr 01 - 11:23 AM Okay, I've had a reply back from Bernard (Wrigley), which has essentially the same words posted by 'bradfordian'. There are subtle differences which make it worthwhile - these are the 'official' words from an ex-member of 5p, so NER!!
Best Wishes Bernard CHORUS: Ee by gum but I'm cowd Ee by gum but I'm cowd My hands are like stone, my feet like lead I have na' been warm sin' I left my bed I'st get reyt up to't' fire, as near as I'm allowed Then I might get gradely warm at last Ee by gum but I'm cowd Owd Jonathan Pratt were a gradely chap but he liked a pint of ale That's why his nose were allus red and his cheeks were allus pale An' if tha' stopped him on the street to pass the time of day In drunken tones as he raised his hat this is what he'd say Oh a glass at night wur 'is great delight for it warmed him up you know But often o'er t'danger line th'owd beggar used to go The parson said 'My man, you¹re on your downward way' But Jonathan said 'Well I dunna much care - it¹s warm down there they say' Now Jonathan finally met his match with a yard of ale they say So they laid him out wi' a jug of stout to warm him on his way The devil welcomed him and showed him all his charm But Jonathan said 'If this is hell it¹s none so bloody warm' |
Subject: RE: LYR REQ Ee By Gum But I'm Cold From: GUEST,JohnB Date: 10 Apr 01 - 12:43 PM Bernard, did you ever sing with Bernard Wrigley ?? Many years ago I remember Bernard playing with another Bernard both of them playing concertina. BW used to play a wonderful Bass concertina. JohnB |
Subject: RE: LYR REQ Ee By Gum But I'm Cold From: Bernard Date: 10 Apr 01 - 01:45 PM Yes, but never in public! I think you are thinking of Dave Brooks - they were a duo around the late '60's, just after we all left school. I've got a lap dulcimer made by Stefan Sobell which used to be Dave's. BJW still plays the Bass concertina - odd beast (the concertina - then again, hrmmp!), as it only plays on the 'push'. There are valves set into the bellows, and it sucks air in on the 'pull' stroke. Some years ago I tuned it down to concert pitch so he could record his 'Rough and Wrigley' album, where he wanted to multitrack the bass with other instruments. Until then it was in the old 'brass band pitch'. |
Subject: RE: LYR REQ Ee By Gum But I'm Cold From: GUEST,JohnB Date: 11 Apr 01 - 12:59 PM It was definitely the TWO Bernard's. They played in a small folk club which I used to go to on a Friday night at "The Noel Timpson Youth Centre" on Cheetham Hill Road. Run by a guy called Dave Davidson. Must be another Bernard lurking around. JohnB |
Subject: RE: LYR REQ Ee By Gum But I'm Cold From: Bernard Date: 11 Apr 01 - 01:21 PM Pardon?! Weren't me, 'onest, guv!! As for Bernards lurking - it's our mission in life. No idea who it would have been, though - give me an idea of the year (approx) and I'll 'e' BJW and find out... |
Subject: RE: LYR REQ Ee By Gum But I'm Cold From: GUEST,JohnB Date: 12 Apr 01 - 01:08 PM It would have been somewhere between 1966 and 1969. The last time I saw Bernard W perform was at the Fylde FF in about 1976 +/_ 1. He was on before the Alex Campell Group. He should have been on after them was all we could say. Cheers, JohnB |

Subject: RE: LYR REQ Ee By Gum But I'm Cold From: clansfolk Date: 13 Apr 01 - 05:01 PM Was that the same Dave Brooks who along with his wife June performed as BrookBand? Sam Bracken joined them later.... just a thought Pete |
Subject: RE: LYR REQ Ee By Gum But I'm Cold From: Bernard Date: 13 Apr 01 - 05:37 PM The very same! They even had a TV series for a while. Sam had a wonderful old Fender Palamino - with the distinctive Fender 'scroll' headstock, which always looked a little unusual on an acoustic guitar. Where are they now?! Actually, Dave and his missus live about 3 miles from me or, at least, they did. Mebbe they moved... dunno about Sam, tho'.

Subject: RE: LYR REQ Ee By Gum But I'm Cold From: clansfolk Date: 14 Apr 01 - 08:37 AM About 18 months ago we were playing through some old tapes from the Fleetwood Folk Club 60's 70's for a 30 years CD and came across some recordings of them - what memories - I miss the magic hammer!!! It would be nice if they still toured - the festival scene would be enhanced if they still give off the enthusiasm and fun element they had back then. Plus of course a lot of talent!! Lets start a campaign Pete |

Subject: I've got the chorus whats the rest ? From: GUEST,shaygate@hotmail.com Date: 14 Dec 01 - 08:56 AM Long time ago I heard a song who's chrous I can remember but I would love to know what the song was called and the rest of the lyrics. The chorus went like this : Eee by gum but I'm cold Eee by gum but I'm cold Me arms are like stone, me feet are like lead I anna bina warm sin I left me bed I'll sit reight up t' fire, as near as I'm allowed And I might get greatly warm again Eee by gum but I'm cold All sung in a broad yorkshire accent, hence the strange phonetic spellings. Anybody know the rest ? :-) Ian |
Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: I've got the chorus whats the From: Snuffy Date: 14 Dec 01 - 09:05 AM I think it's probably called "Ee bah gum, but I'm cowd" or something similar. If memory serves me right it was recorded (in the 70s?) by Five Penny Piece, who, I believe, actually come from the right (i.e. left) side of the Pennines. WassaiL! V |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Ee By Gum But I'm Cold From: GUEST,Sue in Blackpool Date: 09 Feb 12 - 08:14 AM Very grateful for the lyrics, as I was wanting 2 sing them at my Mums 90th bday party on sunday. When I saw Bernard Wrigleys name come up I was thrilled! Used 2 follow his concerts , performances early 70s, Fleetwood folk Clubs Battle of the Roses with Tony Capstick, Bernard alone performing at Thornton were always evening of laughter. Loveeee his album Rough n Wrigley :) and it was a joy 2 see him popping up on Coronation Street, Emmerdale, Pheonix Nights over the years. But his singing voice will last in my memory for many decades more, long live the Bolton Bullfrog x |
