Subject: Lyrics for Silence and Tears
From: GUEST,PJ Lyons
Date: 26 Jun 01 - 11:29 AM

I heard at beautiful, probably Irish, song several years ago, possibly at Milwaukee Irish Fest, that was about 2 people parting in silence and tears. The song was about an illicit relationship with either a married person or a priest/nun. I have a bit of it on tape, but not all of it.

The first two lines were: When we two parted in silence and tears How broken hearted to sever for years.. and the last verse was : In secret we met, in silence I grieve that my heart should confess and my spirit deceive And if I should meet thee after long, long years Tell me how should I greet thee? But with silence and tears.

It's not the song Solas has on their newest CD, though it may be another version. Does anyone know the rest of the lyrics for this song, (it had 4 verses) and who might have recorded it?

Thanks!

Subject: Lyr Add: WHEN WE TWO PARTED (Lord Byron)
From: Trapper

A quick search of GOOGLE.COM reveals:

When We Two Parted

WHEN WE TWO PARTED
by Lord Byron

When we two parted
In silence and tears,
Half broken-hearted
To sever for years,
Pale grew thy cheek and cold,
Colder thy kiss;
Truly that hour foretold
Sorrow to this.

The dew of the morning
Sunk chill on my brow--
It felt like the warning
Of what I feel now.
Thy vows are all broken,
And light is thy fame;
I hear thy name spoken,
And share in its shame.

They name thee before me,
A knell to mine ear;
A shrudder comes o'er me--
Why wert thou so dear?
They know not I knew thee,
Who knew thee so well--
Long, long I shall rue thee,
Too deeply to tell.

In secret we met--
In silence I grieve,
That thy heart could forget,
Thy spirit deceive
If I should meet thee
After long years,
How should I greet thee?--
With silence and tears.

Sounds like they died, rather than were inaccessible for wordly reasons...? But beautiful!

Find the explanations of the theme of the song fascinating; it's one I sing, but I'd not heard either of these two explanations before. you might find more background on the poetry site (George Gordon, Lord Byron)

Martyn Wyndham-Read does a great version of this - I think he uses his own tune, but I wouldn't be sure of that. Anyway, hear it if you can. Better still be there when he sings it. Or just about anything else he cares to sing.

I've only ever heard Martin's rather fine tune used (it is his own), though it's a well-known poem and there may be other settings.  I don't see any reference to death in the verses, and have always rather imagined a reference to Byron's notorious (alleged) incestuous relationship with his half-sister, Augusta Leigh; certainly the poem is particularly poignant if read in that light.   It's not even slightly Irish; Byron was English of Scottish descent, and Martin is English, though he spent quite a time working in Australia and specialises in the music of that country.

The poem was written when Byron was 20 years old.

I found an excellent article on the history of the song "Silence or Tears" (as it is most commonly titled) in Bluegrass Today. The short version is that back in the 1950s two young bluegrass players came up with it: Tom Gray wrote a tune and Jerry Stuart adapted Byron's poem to fit it.

It's been played by dozens of bluegrass groups at a pace ranging from brisk to blistering, most famously the Country Gentlemen. The Sangsters slowed it down a lot! Martin Wyndham-Read uses the same tune but altered it somewhat and omitted the refrain.
