Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Add: God May Forgive You But I Don From: Stewie Date: 01 Aug 01 - 02:38 AM The song's title is 'God Will'. It was written and recorded by Lyle Lovett on his self-titled first album on the Curb label. |
Subject: Lyr Add: GOD WILL (Lyle Lovett) From: Quincy Date: 01 Aug 01 - 05:27 AM Yep Stewie...written and sung by him... GOD WILL (Lyle Lovett) Who keeps on trusting you when you've been cheatin' spending your nights on the town Who keeps on saying that he still wants you when you're through running around and who keeps on loving you when you've been lying saying things aren't what they seem Well God does, but I don't and God will, but I won't that's the difference between God and me God does, but I don't God will, but I won't That's the difference between God and me So who says he'll forgive you and says that he'll miss you and dream of your sweet memory God does, but I don't God will, but I won't and that's the difference betweeen God and me God does, but I don't God will, but I won't That's the difference between God and me. Lyrics e-mailed to guest. best wishes, Yvonne

Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Add: God May Forgive You But I Don From: GUEST,genie Date: 02 Aug 01 - 12:26 AM Stewie and Quincy, Thanks for the lyrics to Lyle's song, but it does not seem to be the same one. The chorus to the one Iris sings goes pretty much like this:
Yes, Jesus loves you but I don't. They don't have to live with you, Neither do I. You say that you're born again, well, so am I. God may forgive you, but I won't; I won't even try. I would like to find the whole thing and/or what CD it s on. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: God May Forgive You But I Don't From: Stewie Date: 02 Aug 01 - 01:28 AM My apologies - given what you quoted, Lyle's song seemed likely. I have 3 Iris Dement CDs - as far as I aware, she has released only 3 - and a song with your chorus is not on any of them. If she has recorded it, it is likely to be on a compilation, concert set or something of that kind. --Stewie. |
Subject: Rosie Flores From: GUEST,Gene Date: 02 Aug 01 - 01:43 AM Rosie Flores was on a major label and thinks that but for a trick of fate, she might have been - at least for a while - a country star.
In 1987, she released an album on Reprise. Three singles made the country charts, but the most successful, "Crying Over You" only reached 51. Flores thought the hit song on that album was Harlan Howard's "God May Forgive You (But I Won't)."
But her label would never release it as a single because Lyle Lovett had just had a hit with "God Will," a song very similar both musically and lyrically. "That was my first disappointment with Reprise because they didn't stand up for me on that," she said.
Lovett actually was going to take Howard to court until it turned out that Howard's song had been written five years earlier and never recorded because, as Flores put it, "No one had the guts." These long out-of-print Reprise recordings will finally appear on CD early next year.
The package will come out on the Rounder label and will include non-LP tracks. Flores is currently writing the notes for this reissue, tentatively scheduled for February.

Subject: Lyr Add: GOD MAY FORGIVE YOU (BUT I WON'T)^^^ From: Stewie Date: 02 Aug 01 - 02:12 AM Well done, Gene. That's an interesting story. I always liked Rosie Flores' stuff, especially 'Heartbreak Train', but I would never have remembered that song. As it happens, I have that old Reprise LP in my vinyl collection and it has a lyric sheet. Harlan Howard was always a cut above the Nashville scribbling pack:
GOD MAY FORGIVE YOU (BUT I WON'T) Cheers, Stewie. ^^^ ;-)

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: God May Forgive You But I Don't From: Stewie Date: 02 Aug 01 - 02:44 AM Gene, you are quite right - she does it on 'Our Town' which seems to be a 3 track CD. The 3 I have before me are 'The Way I Should', 'My Life' and 'Infamous Angel'. Looking around the net, there is also 'Wasteland of the Free' and I am now sure that I have that somewhere in my collection but it's not with the others - it is a long time since I've given Iris a second thought. My apologies then for the misinformation - she actually has 5 CDs. Anyhow the lyrics are there now, and that is half of the request fulfilled. --Stewie. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: God May Forgive You But I Don't From: Stewie Date: 02 Aug 01 - 05:28 AM Another correction. I was intrigued because I felt sure I had all Iris' CDs. I rang my country music supplier in Sydney and he confirms that there are only 3 substantive or full-length CDs. The 'Our Town' with the song on it is some kind of CD single or EP. Also, 'Wasteland of the Free' was released as a CD single - there is no album of that title. 'Wasteland of the Free' appears on 'The Way I Should' and, obviously, that is where I recall it from. No wonder I couldn't find a CD of that name - I have never purchased a CD single of any kind. --Stewie. |
