Does anyone have the lyrics to this song? It's on Planxty's Cold Blow and the Rainy Night.

Here are the lyrics, as I learned them.

P STANDS FOR PADDY
Source: Bard (in Canada)

P stands for Paddy, I suppose
J for my love John,
And the W stands for false William
And Johnny is the fairest man
Johnny is the fairest man, my dear,
    Johnny is the fairest man.
And I don't care what anybody says,
But Johnny is the fairest man.

I walked out one May morning
For to take a pleasant walk,
I sat meself down on an old stone wall
To hear two lovers talk.     To hear what they might say, my dear,
For to hear what they might say
So that I might know a little more about love
    Before I go away.

P stands for Paddy, I suppose
J for my love John,
And the W stands for false William
And Johnny is the fairest man

"Come and sit you down beside meself,
Over here on the pleasant green,
For it's been three quarters of a year or more
Since together we have been."

"No, I'll not sit by you," says she,
"Not today nor at any other time!
For I hear you love another pretty girl,
And your heart's no longer mine.
Your heart's no longer mine, my dear,
No your heart's no longer mine.
It's been three quarters of a year—no more—
And your heart's no longer mine."

P stands for Paddy, I suppose
J for my love John,
And the W stands for false William
And Johnny is the fairest man

I will climb a tall tall tree
And I'll rob the wild bird's nest.
Then I'll come down with what I find there
To the arms that I like best.
To the arms that I like best, my dear,
To the arms that I like best.
Yes, I'll climb right down and run straight home
To the arms that I like best.

P stands for Paddy, I suppose
J for my love John,
And the W stands for false William
And Johnny is the fairest man
Johnny is the fairest man, my dear,
    Johnny is the fairest man—
And now I know a little more about love
    Before I travel on.

It's also known as the House Carpenter. You might have some luck under that title.

"The House Carpenter" is by Laurence Price, Feb., 1657 (ZN2466 in my broadside index), and has nothing to do with "T stands for Thomas", unless someone go their songs mixed up. The earliest copy of the latter that I can find is a version collected in 1907 and published in JFSS #19, p. 174, 1915.

Here's how the song appears in Song and Story: An Anthology of Irish Folk Songs by Michael D. Morrissey, page 161:

P STANDS FOR PADDY

1. As I rode out upon a May morning for to take a pleasant walk,
I sat meself down beside a stone wall for to hear two lovers talk;
For to hear what they might say, my dear, for to hear what they might say,
So that I might know a little more about love before that I'd go away.

CHORUS:
P stands for Paddy, I suppose; J for my love John.
W stands for false Willy-o but Johnny is the fairest man.
Ay, Johnny is the fairest man, my dear. Johnny is the fairest man,
And I don't care what anybody says, for Johnny is the fairest man.

2. Well, it's come and sit beside me, love, together on the green.
It's a long three-quarters of a year or more since together we have been,
Since together we have been, my dear, since together we have been.
It's a long three-quarters of a year or more since together we have been.

3. No, I'll not sit by you, love, now or at any other time,
For you're in love with another pretty girl, and your heart's no longer mine,
And your heart's no longer mine, my dear, and your heart's no longer mine.
It's a short three-quarters of a year or more, and your heart's no longer mine.

4. Well, I'll go and climb a high, high tree, and I'll rob that wild bird's nest,
And back I'll come and give a little thought to the girl that I love best,
To the girl that I love best, my dear, to the girl that I love best.
Oh, back I'll come and give a little thought to the girl that I love best.
