Subject: South Roscommon - Congrats. From: Frank McGrath Date: 16 Dec 98 - 05:26 PM Martin Ryan is a very regular contributor to the Mudcat threads but he is too modest to blow his own trumpet. Martin and his friends in the South Roscommon Singers Circle have launched a new and excellent cd called "What will we do?". It features many of their members and is a must for anyone interested in traditional unaccompanied singing. Possibly Martin might leave his humility for a little while and tell us more about it - like how to get hold of a copy. Congratulations to the South Roscommon Singers Circle. Frank McGrath |

The CD is indeed launched - with the help of Jimmy Murray, in whose pub the circle started a few years ago. Jimmy won an All-Ireland with Roscommon in 1943 and 1944 (the Irish among you will know how cosmic an event that was). He is also a fine singer - still, at the age of 81. As I said to him: "if I can keep my teeth in at your age , never mind sing - I'll be happy!"
I'll look into the cost of postage but I'm unlikely to refuse $20 or therabouts in reasonably negotiable form (Saorry guys - CD's are expensive on this side of the water. SOmething to do with the damp). We'll probably end up marketing it via John Moulden's Ulstersongs also. For that matter - Max - are you interested in holding a few?

Subject: RE: Roscommon From: George Henderson Date: 17 Dec 98 - 05:37 AM Just a short addition to Frank’s comments. Mike Scanlan and I were in Knockroghery for the launching of this fine CD. The singing talent was unbelievable. I tried to count the singers at one stage but lost count after 35 and there was still a lot to go. Frank Harte was also there and in fine voice. The CD is magnificent and, apart from their two guest tracks from "Baby Sham", it is typical of a night at one of their sessions. It is nearly as good as ours (Nenagh Singers Circle) which is also available via Frank or myself at the same price of $20.00, and which was launched about 18 months ago. John Moulden is also carrying our CD as is Living Tradition. Georgehenderson@tinet.ie

It's a song Ewan McColl wrote at the time of a strike in the early eighties involving workers in a supermarket which was selling South African goods. I've always called it "The Girls of Dublin City", just to confuse the issue, but Peggy Seeger tells me "10 young women..." was the original title. It had never been recorded, as far as she knew. Given the nature of coincidence, I was not too surprised when, less than a fortnight before our launch, it appeared on a CD of Irish Labour Songs released by one our trade unions! I thought I had sent it ot Dick for the DT - but apparently not. Gearoid Regards |

He has started a company to promote Cletic music in our region, called Fiddlehill Music, and has released his first CD called "Many Hats". He does not yet have a computer to access the internet, but I am encouraging him to join in on the Mudcat. I will be singing at a Christamas singalong and session with him this weekend, and I hope to begin organizing a singers circle based on whatever interest is expressed at this singalong on the 19th. Mostly a single unaccompanied voice and a very good collection of songs. How you get together such a collection of good voices in a small area is a secret of Ireland. If that's really "typical of a night at one of their sessions" I can only envy you. Go on and buy that CD unless you hate listening to a capella singing for more than one track. Wolfgang |

We were looking for somewhere to find some music, but no-one mentioned the Roscommon Singers either in Athlone or Knockroghery - pity about that! SJ (aka John Garrick) |
