Subject: RE: Lyr Add.. Poor Lil' Brack Sheep From: GUEST,RhymeCon Date: 15 Sep 06 - 07:55 PM This is a VERY late post to this thread but I stumbled across "Poor lil' brack sheep in "The Best Loved Poems of the American People" P.313, attributed to Ethyl M. C. Brazelton. (Her maiden name I found out elsewhere was Colson). Later I found in "The World's Best Loved Poems," P.144, the same poem, (minus the 2nd & 3rd stanzas), attributed to Paul Laurence Dunbar, considered the first great American black poet. Now I've learned the poem was written by Colson/Brazelton AND Lucy Rider Meyer but I learn elsewhere that Meyer wrote 6 poems and none of them are named "Poor lil' brack sheep." I really like the poem, especially the longer version, but I'm going nuts figuring out if anybody wrote it. |

Subject: Lyr Add: POOR LIL' BRACK SHEEP^^ From: Bill D Date: 13 Jun 98 - 06:40 PM The title in my book is "Poor Lil' Brack Sheep"...copyright 1900 by E.O. Excell... Book is 'Make His Praise Glorious'....says it was written by Ethel Maude Colson and Lucy Rider Meyer POOR LIL' BRACK SHEEP "Poor lil' brack sheep that stray'd away Done los' in de win' and rain An'de shepherd he say:"oh, hirlin' Go and find my sheep again." An de hirlin' froun, "Oh, Shepherd, "Dat sheep am brack and bad.." But de Shepherd, he smile like de brack sheep Wuz de onliest lamb he had" "An' he say, "O hirelin', hasten! For de win' an' de rain am col' An dat lil' brack sheep am lonesome Out dere so far from de fol'". An' de hirelin froun, "O Shepherd, Dat sheep am old and grey." But de Shepherd he smile like de brack sheep, Wuz fair as de break ob day.
An he say, "o hirelin', hasten"
An' de Shepherd go out in de darkness, (last line repeated all the way thru in the book as a sort of 'refrain') the tune given is a 'rough' approximation of what we all sing now, close enough to see the resemblance. ^^ |
