My God got a home up in yonder city Where they don't 'low no sinner men (no sinner men) My God got a home up in yonder city Where they don't 'low no sinner men. While you stay around and a stranger Travelin' through this barber land (this barber land) He holds you in that Union Station Until the time for that train to arrive. Cho. My old mother, sister and brother Some Christian woman pray for me (there's hope for me) My God's got a home up in yonder city Where there are millions of sinner men. Cho. Yes, thou art a Father who live in Heaven Hallowed be Thy Holy Name He will see you with a constant eye He will save you when you come to die. Subject: RE: Lyr Add: I'M A PILGRIM (gospel-spiritual) From: Dicho (Frank Staplin) Date: 10 Nov 01 - 11:45 PM I'M A PILGRIM II 1st verse and chorus: I'm a pilgrim and I'm a stranger; I can tarry but a night, Do not detain me, for I am going To where the fountains are ever flowing. There the glory is ever shining! O, my longing heart, my longing heart is there, Here in this country so dark and dreary, I long have wandered forlorn and weary. Cho. I'm a pilgrim, etc. There's the city to which I journey; My Redeemer, my redeemer is its light! There is no sorrow nor any sighing, Nor any tears there, nor any dying. Cho. I'm a pilgrim, etc. Farewell, dreary earth, by sin so blighted, In immortal beauty soon you'll be arrayed! He who has formed thee will soon restore thee! And then thy dread curse shall never more be. Cho. I'm a pilgrim etc. The Southern Zion Songster, 1864, compiled by Editor, North Carolina Christian Advocate, Raleigh, NC. No author cited. The antecedent of the song collected by John and Ruby Lomax 1939 Southern States Recording Trip. http:// docsouth.unc.edu/imls/zion/zion.html @religion @hymn

Subject: RE: Lyr Add: I'M A PILGRIM (gospel-spiritual) From: wysiwyg Date: 05 Jan 02 - 09:49 PM Dicho, a convenient way to add chords is in parens just before each syllable where they change-- seems everyone can read 'em that way. Like this:
I'm a (B7)pilgrim and a (E)stranger For flats, you can use a lower-case b-- Bb, for instance. Love this song! ~Susan |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: I'M A PILGRIM (gospel-spiritual) From: Rolfyboy6 Date: 05 Jan 02 - 11:10 PM What a great song. Capable of being done in almost every style and with all kinds of different technique. Merle Travis' version is the most well known, with Doc Watson's second, and it can be done shapenote hymn, lined out hymn, spiritual style, secular style, bluegrass, even holy blues. Very sincere and real and everybody likes that stoptime rest in the chorus. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: I'M A PILGRIM (gospel-spiritual) From: Dicho (Frank Staplin) Date: 05 Jan 02 - 11:10 PM Thanks, Susan. That is earier to do and saves space as well. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: I'M A PILGRIM (gospel-spiritual) From: wysiwyg Date: 06 Jan 02 - 12:39 AM Dicho, there was a thread once about how to post chords and while there are HTML whizbangs who can set them up to float over the correct syllable, and we discussed a number of other brilliant approaches that looked great-- this was the one people started just sort of using. Once you get the hang of it, they are easy to transcribe that way and not too hard to play from, either. ~Susan |

Subject: RE: Lyr Add: I'm a Pilgrim (gospel-spiritual) From: Azizi Date: 14 Dec 11 - 02:25 AM Here's a link to a performance of this song by the renown African American Gospel group The Soul Stirrers: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TLNvEm1vmOU Paul Foster sung the lead for this rendition of the song. Here's my transcription of that song from the video: I'M A PILGRIM (The Soul Stirrers's version) Chorus: Whooo! I'm a pilgrim [I'm a pilgrim] And a stranger [And a stranger] Travelin through [travelin through] This ole barren land [Barren land] I got a home [I got a home] In yonder city, Lord And I will do The best I can Chorus repeated with group responses as above: I'm a pilgrim Nothin but a stranger Everyday I'm travelin this ole barren land But I got a home In yonder city Lord And I'll do the best I can Verse 1 (Group humming as counterpoint to the soloist) I've been tempted, Lord I've been tried I've been discouraged On every side. While travelin through this land, Lord Lord I'll do [Lord I'll do] the best I can. [The best that I can] Chorus Lord I'm a pilgrim [I'm a pilgrim] And I'm a stranger [I'm a stranger] Don't you know I'm travelin [I'm travelin] This ole barren land [Barren land] But I'm not worried [I'm not worried] I've gotta home [I've got a home] Somewhere yonder city [In yonder city] And I'll do the best I can. Verse 2 (When I) Get to River Jordan With the tide I can see Canaan on the other side When I get there Take my stand Lord I'll do [Lord I'll do] The best I can [the best that I can] Chorus: Lord, I am a pilgrim Yes! Travelin through this ole barren land But I'm not worried I gotta home Somewhere in yonder city And I'll do the best I can. (Repeat the chorus) -snip- I just added a post on my blog with that transcription and video. That post also includes one more transcription and video of another very well regarded African American group singing this song. I also added the lyrics of this song found online for Johnny Cash, and a video of a White American congregation singing that same version of "I'm A Pilgrim". That post references & gives a hyperlink to this thread with special mention of Dicho's early comments. Here's the link for that post: "http://pancocojams.blogspot.com/2011/12/three-versions-of-gospel-song-im.html -Best wishes, Azizi Powell |
