Chanteyranger, I received my copy yesterday from CD Baby. Great harmonies and lyrics. It was definitely worth the wait. I'm looking forward to you and Radriano performing at the Mystic Sea Music Festival in June.

I got my copy in the mail from Peter this afternoon and I'm enjoying it greatly. I have to say that the voices sounded a little flat (is that the word I want?) but eventually I realized that what I was missing was the echo effect of the "Thayer"'s hull. Or the "Balclutha"'s cabin. Doesn't sound the same in my den as it does in its appropriate place.

Actually, "Sundown Below" does seem to have that echo. How did you do that?

Hi Franz. Glad you're enjoying the album.

All recordings have echo (reverb) added in the recording/mixing process unless the recording takes place outside of a studio. Even then the amount of reverb can be controlled somewhat. There are programs available that can even add the ambience of different halls to a recording. Ultimately the amount of reverb on any given track of a recording is a choice made by the recording artist or producer.

Richard

You are welcome, Radriano & Chanteyranger!

Let me know what sort of information you'd like posted about "Out of the Rain" and we'll see what we can work out. It's not likely to get posted as fast as the basic site - as you know, I'm stretched a bit thin these days - but I think something can be arranged.

I'm also hoping to get to Mystic this year - but I won't know my work schedule until just before the festival, so who knows. At least we have the CD!

Dick Greenhaus now has it available through CAMSCO, at www.camscomusic.com.

Cllr, will you be at the SF free Folk Fest again, or coming in at another time? Yeah, what Dave Swan said.

Bought a copy of this CD, Boldly From The Westward, at Lancaster Maritime Festival (England) last weekend which has some cracking songs/shanties on it, some of which I have never heard before.

Can anyone tell me the rest of the first line of the chorus on Ten Stone, following:-

Ten stone, ten stone
Ten stone the wind and.............

Well done Radriano and Chanteyranger.

Thanks you, Chalkie! Are you Chalkie White? Saw your inscription at "The Ship" pub in Yorkshire a few years back: "I got wrecked at The Ship."

The words are ungrammatical, making it understandably hard to decipher. They are:

Ten stone, the wind am over (meaning the wind is over)

Many thanks to Ken and Jan Lardner of the Chantey Cabin for making "Boldly from the Westward" available at this season's maritime festivals in England. The Lardners will also carry our new CD on the Chantey Cabin website in the near future:

Hi' Chanteyranger and Radriano.

Yes 'tis I, Chalkie White, however, a word of caution, I would imagine that most Chalkie's would have a Sir Name of White.

"The Ship" pub in Yorkshire could be one of many and though I have frequented The Ship in Whitby a number of times during Whitby Folk week I am at a loss as to what the inscription could be, perhaps just another namesake.

I sing in a shanty crew over on this side of the pond and intend nicking a couple of the shanties on your CD. Hope this is OK with yourselves?

I've since found the chorus and one verse in Stan Hugill's Seven Sea's, which I'd never noticed before, but thanks for the reply.

For anyone who does not know, Jan and Ken at the Chantey Cabin hold what I believe is the worlds largest collection of maritime recordings for sale. Their site is well worth a visit with good links to other sites and many artists own web sites.

All the best

Chalkie

Our new release "Boldly from the Westward" is now listed on the Chantey Cabin site (see the link two posts before this) for those in the UK who might want to get the album and avoid paying overseas shipping costs.

Ditto, Chalkie, on what Radriano said. I should have known there's more than one "The Ship" in Yorkshire! Where I saw your sign was in the lobby of the pub/hotel in Marske, if my memory's correct. I took a photo of it. Painted in red against white, it say's "I got wrecked at 'The Ship.' Chalkie White, 1999."

Sounds a very good epitaph, but unfortunately not one that can be attributed to me.... not in The Ship in Marske anyway. Never been to the place, although I do have a friend who sings in the Marske Fishermens Choir. Excellent Choir.

If you see Danny and Joyce at the San Francisco Maritime Festival, tell them Alan White, from Landlocked, says hello. You'r getting a couple of fine harmony singers there and what Danny doesn't know about shanties and Cicely Fox Smith is not worth knowing.

All the best with the new CD.

I'll certainly see Danny and Joyce, since I booked them for the festival, and will gladly pass your message on to them. Thanks again for the good word on the CD.

You know, since this other Chalkie White got wrecked at The Ship and might have forgotten everything he did that day.......it could've been you. *BG*

Hi Richard & Peter
As ever I always come in at the tail end but like a banquet set for a king its best digested slowly & well savored. Well I have certainly digested your CD. I'm home most of the time now so it's been a most welcomed guest in our house & by now my wife & kids are positive that they all have a special, on going relationship with both of you. The material you've chosen is, as far as I'm concerned, in a "league of its own" & should raise the bar for those that follow, but knowing you guys I'd be shocked at anything less. Well I'm sure you know how partial I am to your recording of 'Hard Times in Old Virginia' it really is a killer. You can't believe how bowed over I was to hear "Goodbye, My Lover, Goodbye". For years I've been keeping a weather eye out & an ear towards the wind in hopes of hearing someone singing this (it may be common to others but it wasn't to me). I've only ever read of references to this song & have seen it in print & knew right off that it was a kick 'em & kill 'em & a knock 'em down dead song & after hearing you guys doing it I knew I was right all along. I'd say my opinion is that its been a good few years & still I haven't heard better & only a few I'd say were an equal to what you two have here. Make sure you bring a good supply of your CD's to Mystic & plan on very little sleep & lots of late night (& day) singing. It'll be good to see & hear both of you again in a few weeks.

Barry

Barry, Thanks for the kind words. I'm looking forward to spending some time with you at Mystic. It's hard to believe that soon I won't be a mystic virgin anymore!

Charley, I should introduce you to our website designer. I think you two would get along nicely. Are you seeing anyone right now?

Since this thread, Richard and I have recorded three more; two available in hard copy and digital downloads, the last one available as a digital download only. Richard's website is https://walkashore.com, where you can find liner notes, track lists, and digital downloads. I'm the keeper of the CDs, and if you'd like to purchase hard copies, please send me a private message and I'll give you my mailing address. All major cash accepted, lol! Hard copies Arte $20 each, or $17 if ordering all three, and in all cases I'll pay the postage and handling.
