?? Are you sure you don't want The Black Fox by Graham Pratt? ...which is in the database.

about the fox which tricks the hunt and gets away?

"Well as we were out a hunting
One morning in the spring
Both hounds and horses were running well
Made the hills and the valleys ring?

My searching has turned up nothing. I can't even confirm that such a song exists.

Funny thing, although a song book is being advertised, I can't find a list of the songs in it.

Amazon.co.uk lists 2 cassettes by him, but RUNNING FOX isn't on either of them.

Allmusic.com doesn't list a song called RUNNING FOX. Neither does Gracenote.com.

It might help to have a quote from the song, the longer the better.

You can hear a bit of "Black Fox" here just in case it might be the one.

A folk band called The Young 'Uns include a track attributed to Graeme Miles on their album "Never Forget."

The lyrics are as follows, copied from the liner notes:

On yonder rocks there lives a fox and one crisp winter's morn
He's pricked up his ears 'cos didn't he hear the huntsman blow his horn
And far away the hounds did bay and Reynard knew the score
For he must make good his escape from the jaws of death once more

So away he's bound for safer ground and he's left his den behind
Through mire and weed and at great speed so no scent will they find
He's made a rush for the bramble bush
and he's leapt a dry stone while
And out across to yonder copse
where the nettle and grass grow tall

(CHORUS)
Oh the hounds! The hounds! The hounds!
Why won't they let me be?
There's many a beast can roam at will
So why, oh why, not me?

It's out of breath he next did rest among the grass and trees
He's gazed across the frozen moss his chasers for to see
A mile ahead a flash of red - the huntsmen in their coats
But the baying hounds his scent have found
and dampened Reynard's hopes

(CHORUS)

Stay clear he will of Freebrough Hill
where they brought his brother down
That's where they tore him limb from limb
and showed his brush around
But Reynard's sly and didn't he fly over clarty moor and bog
Where no man nor horse can make a course nor like wise can a dog

(CHORUS)

It's through the mire breathless and tired he's shaken off the hounds
Far far away he can hear them bay but the horn no longer sounds
The men in red have gone instead to the Jolly Sailor Inn
And Reynard sits a licking his lips and lives to fight again.

I hope you find this helpful!

Cheers
