Subject: Background on Song/Chanty Fire Meringo From: Naemanson Date: 01 Jan 01 - 11:06 PM This morning Jeri, Bat Goddess, Curmudgeon and I were discussing the history and background of Fire Meringo. Here is what we have so far. Royston Wood of the Young Tradition wrote the tune. Some of the words in the song come from Hugil but they are included in the introduction and the author states that the tune is lost. What else can the Mudcat come up with for this gem? |
Subject: RE: Background on Song/Chanty Fire Meringo From: Barry Finn Date: 02 Jan 01 - 09:24 PM Johnny Collins has this on his CD, lead by Dave Webber, "Shanties & Songs Of The Sea". All the notes say is that it's a halyard shanty used for stowing cotton & that it comes from the Gulf Ports. Barry |
Subject: RE: Background on Song/Chanty Fire Meringo From: Jeri Date: 03 Jan 01 - 05:42 PM The song is in Hugill, as Naemanson wrote. The verses about Sally Brown are the ones that are NOT there. There is no tune. I think it was Bonnie Milner who told me Royston Wood found the song in Hugill and wrote the tune. The authorship of the tune is confirmed by Heather Wood's Young Tradition discography. I suspect R. Wood added verses from another shanty. |
Subject: RE: Background on Song/Chanty Fire Meringo From: Naemanson Date: 03 Jan 01 - 05:46 PM Charlie says his version comes from Forebitter's recording. He doesn't know where the extra verses come from. |
Subject: RE: Background on Song/Chanty Fire Meringo From: Jeri Date: 03 Jan 01 - 06:03 PM Naemanson, my reason for thinking Wood added verses is, if he got it from Hugill and added the tune AND was in the first group to sing/record it, he - or someone else in Young Tradition - HAD to be the one who added verses. (Young Tradition = Peter Bellamy, Royston Wood, Heather Wood.) |
