OK, Rita mentioned starting this thread, but I'm gonna do it for her, because I want to be sure that everyone within shouting distance of Hillsborough/Durham/Chapel Hill/Raleigh NC knows that Elizabeth is performing at The James Pharmacy Restaurant in Hillsborough this coming Saturday night at 9pm.

Shameless self-promotion aside, I'm thrilled that she's coming. I've only heard bits of her singing at the Getaway, but it was enough to pique my interest! And then right before the Getaway, as I was reading about her new CD, I got a call from her uncle, who plays in a fabulous local old-time band, wondering if we'd have a date available for his niece, who sings. Sure, you've got a niece who sings, I thought.... Good thing we kept talking! It's a small and very wonderful world.

So the Hushpuppies, AND Elizabeth, AND (I imagine) her mother Sandy will be here, and I expect you all to be here. At least in spirit...

Dani

Oh, Dani, thanks for setting this up for such a wonderful young singer. Now, everybody within reasonable driving distance, BE THERE! (Maine is not a reasonable driving distance, so I'll just have to be there in spirit.) Kathy

Gee, Dani, it sounds like you have a wonderful evening ahead of you. Wish I could be there. Elizabeth has been an invited guest at the last two FSGW Getaways, so many of us have had an opoportunity to hear her. I especially enjoy watching Elizabeth sing with her mother, because they interact so beautifully.
Her CD is called Rain and Snow: Old Songs and Ballads from the Mountains, and it just came out in 2004. Here's the track list:
  1. Gypsen Davey (3:19)
  2. Black is the Color (3:27)
  3. Come All You Fair and Tender Ladies (2:12)
  4. My Dearest Dear (1:57)
  5. Darlin Corey (2:37)
  6. Over the River Charlie (2:21)
  7. Squirrel (1:13)
  8. Wagoners Lad (2:23)
  9. Come All You Virginia Girls (2:08)
  10. West Virginia Mine Disaster (4:17) [Jean Ritchie, Geordie Music]
  11. Fly Around My Blue-Eyed Gal (2:02)
  12. Devil's Nine Questions (2:31)
  13. Young Emily (4:18)
  14. Pretty Saro (1:59)
  15. Storms Are on the Ocean (2:16)
  16. Whole Heap A Little Horses (1:39)
  17. Rain and Snow (2:27)
Total: 43:06

Elizabeth does a darn good job on 60's rock 'n' roll songs, too. Maybe you should ask her to do a few of those too, Dani.

And a fine CD it is too! Even if you can't get to the concert in Hillsborough (which I regret I can't), do consider ordering the CD. Elizabeth is really amazing -- a very young singer with an old-fashioned, traditional style, not to mention a powerful voice and presence. It's comforting to know American traditional music is in such capable hands for the future.

Thanks, Dani, for putting this on!

Nancy

Here is a link to Elizabeth Laprelle's new website. It was just launched in the last week. It's got lyrics and sound bytes to the songs on her CD. I think everyone should buy her CD, at least one copy. They would make great gifts. No, I'm not getting kickbacks for promoting Elizabeth and her CD. I just feel good about the future of American traditional mountain songs when I think of Elizabeth.

Me too, JudyO. Thanks to Dick and Camsco.

Incidentally, Dick, remember when you were having people listen to various CD cuts on your headphones at the Getaway? I asked you then about this one gospel song and singer and you looked up the CD. I bought it and brought it home, and it's one of my favorites at the moment. It is by E.C. Ball and Orna. I and my singing partner are in the midst of learning 'In the Shelter of His Arms', which is the song I asked about. Lovely tune.

So don't stop having people listen! Thanks, Dick.

Ebbie

Great CD and a beautiful lady. I mentioned in another thread that years from now some of us will be able to say "Elizabeth LaPrelle? Oh I sang with her at the Getaway around 2003. She was only sixteen and we knew then that she was destined for great things." I can't be at the concert but I will be in spirit.

With luck, people will read this thread who have NOT heard, or heard of, Elizabeth LaPrelle. So. Why is this CD such good news? And what's the connection with Mudcat?

In 2003, Lorraine, Karen K and I attended an Appalachian Ballads class given by Sheila Kaye Adams. Elizabeth and her mom, Sandy, were in the class. Sheila Kaye said, "I've decided to have Elizabeth give our class concert." I had no idea who "Elizabeth" was. Oh. It's the girl who's been sitting next to us, the one who's here with her mom. ....

Elizabeth, said Sheila Kaye, was 15 years old. (She's 17 now, a high school senior.) She sang "Rain and Snow" for us, and there's no way to describe the impact. Here we all were, trying to get the hang of any of the stylistic elements in Sheila Kaye's singing -- and here was Elizabeth singing effortlessly and beautifully, with a huge, gorgeous voice, in authentic Appalachian style, as if she was born to it.

Sheila Kaye said, at the end of the week, "Folks say Bobby McMillon and I are the last of the dinosaurs. We aren't. But we saw the last dinosaurs. This tradition is dying out." After hearing Elizabeth LaPrelle you couldn't help thinking, "If Elizabeth sings like this at 15, she has the potential to help keep this tradition alive if she continues with this music."

I wasn't sure if she'd be interested, but felt that if she was, maybe we could offer her some encouragement. So the Folklore Society of Greater Washington (FSGW) invited her to our Getaway in 2003 and again in 2004, which is one reason so many Mudcatters know her. The Getaway always has lots of wonderful musicians but Elizabeth just blew people away. I remember Barry Finn said something like, "I'm going to throw away the workshop schedule and just follow Elizabeth around all weekend."

Elizabeth does have a great voice and the old-time sound but that's not the whole story. To me, her music is memorable because of the way she can get inside a song and tell the story. It works for "Squirrel," which is a lullaby, or for a Child ballad, a mining disaster song, Carter family, whatever. To me that's what makes a singer.

Since Sheila Kaye's class in 2003, Elizabeth won the Henry Reed grant, learned lots of new songs, did a house concert for FSGW, sang at the Friends of Old Time Music Festival and the West Virginia State folk festival, did a guest spot with Ginny Hawker, won lots more singing competitions -- and made a CD. By popular request.

She has also continued to be an honor student, by the way, and to submit college applications, looking forward to her high school graduation next spring.

It's just too neat that she's going to perform at Dani's restaurant. Dani, that's a wonderful story. I heard Bill start laughing at the computer and he said, "Rita, come here, there's something you've got to read...." I read up to "Sure, you've got a niece who sings, I thought...." and then I burst out laughing too.

Well I'm glad you did start a thread! Elizabeth, if you read this I apologize if I embarrassed you but you know it's all true.

I hope that people who like American trad and old time will check out the web site. Lots of good stuff there.

Rita

May I join the chorus on this one? Elizabeth is a treasure. One of the "laugh out loud" moments for me at The Getaway was when I suggested to her that she must be getting sick of hearing how great she is. She busted out in a big smile and said, "No way, keep telling me. I love it". She just tickled me. And such talent. When I hear her, I hear Jean Ritchie's influence all over her.

Go, young woman. I feel that the tradition is safe in your hands.

All the best,

Mick

I will admit I am an uneducated ignoramus - what I don't know about traditional music includes nearly the entire corpus of knowledge.

What I *do* know is that Elizabeth is an incredible singer whom it is an intense pleasure to hear perform.

Elizabeth- Here's a big bunch of roses for your performance tonight! You'll just have them in your heart- as I know not where to send them. At my first concert in New York, I wept when someone handed me a lovely armful of flowers...on getting home, I found the card, Alan Lomax! It would not have mattered who gave them, but I never forgot them. So, I wish that my bouquet were real, but enjoy them in your thoughts, as I'm enjoying your music even though it's just a recording!

Joy and blessings for your life,    Jean Ritchie

Elizabeth, her mom, and the Hushpuppies (her uncle's band) all put on great performances to a packed house who obviously appreciated what they were hearing. Elizabeth was not known in these parts---but she sure is now!

Congradulations Elizabeth, on your wonderfully successful Triangle Area debut.

Everywhere Elizabeth goes, it seems like she is surrounded with friends. You folkies, particularly Mudcatters, are just very nice people.

This is in addition to your exquisite taste in music that lets you appreciate the fine characteristics of my wife and kid.

Thanks to Dani for turning her fine restaurant over to Saturday night's mob and thanks to you all for your support.
