Subject: Review: 1st Danny Boy Fiddle Competition From: GUEST,Ptarmigan Date: 09 Aug 05 - 02:16 PM 1ST 'DANNY BOY' FIDDLE COMPETITION - A RESOUNDING SUCCESS The event took place on Sunday 7th August in Limavady, County Derry. "Hello, thought you might be interested to know that the first 'Danny Boy Fiddle Competition' took place last Sunday 7th August, in Limavady, Co. Derry. It was devised by Bodhran Legend Seamus O'Kane to promote the ancient music of Ulster, as collected and published by Edward Bunting from the 1792 Belfast Harp Festival, and later field work. Event judges were all musical legends in their own right and need no introduction, namely Frankie Gavin, Tommy Peoples & Tomas O'Canainn. Six groups entered, including one by ace Fiddler Donal O'Connor, which included amazing piper John McSherry. Flute legend extraordinaire Harry Bradley had another group in. However first place and £3,000 went to Roisin McGrory's eleven piece group from Inishowen, Donegal. Their line up included five fiddles plus Uilleann Pipes, Flute, Harp, Piano & Button Accordions & Mandolin. Their choice of music was delightful and the arrangements breathtaking. They were clear and very worthy winners on the night. Second place and £2,000 went to Sheila Boylan's six piece group, plus singer, from Co. Derry and included the Boylan sisters from Garvagh plus Paul McSherry on Guitar and Eoighan O'Brien on Harp. Paul and Eoighan actually produced the most memorable musical moment of the night for me, with an amazing duet as an intro to one of their group's pieces. Third place and £1,000 went to 'Clanglamur', two couples - Marcas & Catriona O'Murchu from Derry plus Sabine and Dick Glasgow from Antrim. They were only a four piece outfit, but together played twelve instruments, including Hammered Dulcimer, Fiddle, Flute, Bowed Psaltery, Harp & Whistle. There was standing room only on the night, which was good going for the first year and judging by the success of the event it is sure to become an annual "must attend" event on Ulster's musical calender." Congratulations to all the organisers. |

The All Ireland Fleadh this year is in Letterkenny, Donegal, which is a traditional part of Ulster. I believe it was a compromise to having it in Ulster - if that makes sense. Its a pity I can afford to go to all events around Ireland each year. So I plump for the Fleadh and enjoy the Gig Rig and pub sessions. slan fliss |
