Subject: RE: robeson recording of Internationale? From: Teresa Date: 11 Feb 99 - 04:11 PM I know, I know ... this isn't *folk* music, but I hope one of you eclectic folks can give me a pointer. ... I collect as much Paul Robeson stuff as I can. I have a recording of the now-slightly-antiquated Soviet anthem, the United Nations march, and a number of other political songs. Would anyone know if Robeson recorded the "Internationale" in any language? I can't imagine that he didn't record it, but maybe it's on an out-of-print Melodia (Sic?) ... dare I say vinyl? Anyhow, thanks for any help. Cheers, TeresaP.S. Sorry; I fear this thread may not work out. Ah, well, if it isn't readable after this posting, I'll try again another time. Teresa |
Subject: RE: robeson recording of Internationale? From: Joe Offer Date: 11 Feb 99 - 04:46 PM Hi, Teresa - I found some wonderful Robeson sites here and here and here, but I didn't find a complete discography (but I did find this one). I didn't find THE INTERNATIONALE (click for lyrics) listed in any of the sources I found. It would be interesting to list the songs he should have recorded, and this one would would certainly be at the top of my list, right after "The Holy City" (click here). -Joe Offer- |
Subject: RE: robeson recording of Internationale? From: Teresa Date: 11 Feb 99 - 05:34 PM Thank you, thank you, thank you, Joe! I haven't checked 'em out yet, but I'm sure there'll be a wealth of information on these sites. I'll post my impressions/results on this thread. Cheers, Teresa |
Subject: RE: robeson recording of Internationale? From: Pete M Date: 11 Feb 99 - 06:18 PM Hi Theresa, what makes you think it isn't folk? Paul would I think, qualify as a "folk" singer by any reasonable definition. As for the Internationale, I would think that it has as much right to be considered a folk song as many of Dylans songs and far more so than the "singer songwriter" stuff that seems so prevalent these days. I would be interested in anything you find as I'm sure would be the majority of us. Pete M

Subject: RE: robeson recording of Internationale? From: Teresa Date: 11 Feb 99 - 07:54 PM Yes, I'd like to think of Paul Robeson as a folk singer, and I'm sure he would have liked that, too. The more I think about it, the more I realize that "The Internationale" is the quintessential folk song. I guess I was speaking in deference to the traditionalists. Enough of that rant. I fear I may have opened another can of worms. Oh, no--here we go.(sheepish grin) Cheers, Teresa |
Subject: RE: robeson recording of Internationale? From: Pete M Date: 11 Feb 99 - 10:43 PM Well Teresa as a fully paid up member of the traditionalists, and a curmudgeon to boot, I have to admit that personally I wouldn't class the Internationale as a folk song, but I wouldn't include the other stuff I mentioned either, though a lot of people here would. I consider Robeson to have had one of, if not the best voice since recording began. I don't pretend that I like everything he recorded, some songs I just can't listen to with enjoyment no matter who records them. Fortunately given his background and politics, these are few and far between. Pete M |
Subject: RE: robeson recording of Internationale? From: Teresa Date: 14 Feb 99 - 06:08 PM Yep, Joe--you are right. No Internationale anywheres ... but lots o' other neat treasures. Can't wait to hear the PBS program on Feb. 24, I think it is. ... Ah, well, put it on the list of songs Robeson should have recorded. Ok, Pete, I'm going to admit that I'm more of a traditionalist than anything else--there, I said it. 'nuff said. Thanks, guys, for the discussion, encouragement, and help. Teresa |
