Subject: Lyr/Chords Add: THE VIRGIN MARY HAD A LITTLE BABY
From: Dicho (Frank Staplin)
Date: 23 May 02 - 04:19 PM

Way back in 19 and 98, Joe Offer posted the lyrics and midi to "The Virgin Mary Had a Baby Boy," a Trinidadian traditional spiritual: Virgin Mary
It should be in the DT. The DT lacks this song, only the brief version by J. J. Niles and Peggy Seegar ("Pretty Little Baby" cited by Masato, above).

The American spiritual (or pretty close to the old spiritual) was arranged for guitar, Lead Belly style, by Roger McGuinn and published in 1998: Virgin Mary

THE VIRGIN MARY HAD A LITTLE BABY
 Em
The Virgin Mary had a little baby
Em
Oh, oh, glory hallelujah
Am C
Oh, oh, pretty little baby
Em D Em D Em D
Glory be to the new born king.

Em
Mary what-cha name your pretty little baby
Em
Oh, oh, glory hallelujah
Am C
Oh, oh, pretty little baby
Em D Em D Em D
Glory be to the new born king.

Em
Well some call Him one thing, I know his name is Jesus
Em
Oh, oh, glory hallelujah
Am C
Oh, oh, I know his name is Jesus
Em D Em D Em D
Glory be to the new born king

Em
Some call Him one thing, I'm gonna call Him Savior
Em
Oh, oh, glory hallelujah
Am C
Oh, oh I'm gonna call him Savior
Em D Em D Em D
Glory be to the new born king.

Em
The Virgin Mary had a little baby
Em
Oh, oh glory hallelujah
Am C
Oh, oh pretty little baby
Em D Em D Em D
Glory be to the new born king.

Just looked at my posting of the song again. It may be confusing. The string of "Ahs" are used at the end and also may be used as a chorus between verses.
The tune is different from that of the usual "Pretty Little Baby." I couldn't find when John Bennet collected the song.

Lyr. Add: DE NEW-BORN BABY

Baby, born in Bethlehem,
Oh, when I git in glory,
Oh, when I git in glory,
Glory be to the new-born baby.

D'world reel, but I git in glory,
Oh, when I git in glory,
Oh, when I git in glory,
Glory be to the new-born baby.

My trials rise but I git in glory,
Oh, when I git in glory,
Oh, when I git in glory,
Glory be to the new-born baby.

D'wind blow but I git in glory,
Etc.

Ah,--(2 notes) ah,--(3 notes), ah,--(2 notes) ah,--(3 notes) ah,-----(5 notes) ah,-(one note) ah,------(5 notes, prolonged).

Coll. by John Bennet, sung by Negro fishermen leaving Charleston, SC for the fishing banks. Pentatonic, this version harmonized in minor mode. From Fisher, W. A., 1926, Seventy Negro Spirituals, pp. 24-27, with score, Oliver Ditson Company, Boston (Ditson published its first volume of Negro scores in 1905). Called a Christmas song, obviously also a rowing song. Compare with "Mary Had a Baby Boy," discussed in thread 6712: Mary Had
