The version of this song in the DT reads like a parody of something earlier. & A friend thinks he's heard another version too, somewhere.

Anyone know this old 19th century song? (I asked this question before & thought it was worth trying again)

As noted in DT the song (and tune) are by Henry Clay Work. It was published by S. Brainard's Sons, Cleveland, and entered for copyright in 1869.
