HURSDAY 04/01/2007 10:31:48 Michael Yeats dies The only son of Nobel Prize-winning Irish poet WB Yeats has died. Michael Yeats, 86 was also a former Irish senator and one of the country`s first members of the European Parliament. Irish Taoiseach and Fianna Fail party leader Bertie Ahern said in a tribute that Yeats had a deep and passionate commitment to politics and public service. "He gave dedicated and patriotic service to Fianna Fail, to Ireland and to Europe. "His long career as a public representative brought true distinction to both his party and an illustrious family," he said. Yeats was first appointed to the Irish Senate in 1951 by premier Eamon de Valera and was later re-appointed by Sean Lemass and Jack Lynch. He represented Ireland at the Council of Europe in the 1950s and later served as a MEP from 1973 to 1979. He became vice-president of the Parliament during his tenure. The Taoiseach added: "Over many years, he was an inspiration to generations of Fianna Fail party supporters as a dedicated public representative and political activist." The qualified barrister was also heavily involved in exhibitions of the work of his father, WB Yeats, who won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1923. The north Co Dublin resident was also the grandson of the painter, John Butler Yeats. |
