I believe this lovely, slow spiritual has been mentioned at Mudcat but never posted. I will add chords (and probably additional new verses) as we work this up for our Saturday Night Service.

~Susan

WE SHALL WALK THROUGH THE VALLEY

We shall walk through the valley and the shadow of death;
We shall walk through the valley in peace.
If Jesus Himself shall be our leader...
We shall walk through the valley in peace.

We shall meet our brother there,
We shall meet our brother there.
If Jesus Himself shall be our leader...
We shall walk through the valley in peace.

There will be no weeping there,
There will be no weeping there.
If Jesus Himself shall be our leader...
We shall walk through the valley in peace.

One challenge about our Saturday Night Service is that unlike any other congregational singing I have ever been involved with, our Saturday Night people will try anything, new or known. (Maybe it's more and more like a camp meeting each week! *G*)

So each week it falls to me to bring in new material, and you know, I have been doing this long enough that I sometimes think I may run out! Also, when we do the prettiest tunes, the people complain that "we stopped too soon!" So to get the most out of the tunes as I learn them, often now I create new verses to extend them. Usually I do this by editing multiple versions together, perhaps adding a transition here or there to fill in a partial verse or give a piece of the str=ory otherwise missing.

Where they lack a chorus, I often sit there singing away, leading the song, and thinking, "Man! This tune is getting BORING! I wish it had a BRIDGE! And didn't I just do this verse twice already?!?!"" (I am no good with bridges, unfortunately.)

This one, though, seemed to call out for even more references to the 23rd Psalm... as it was collected as a spiritual, it seems to me to start on one theme and then theme-creep before fulfilling its mission. So this one I remade almost from scratch. It became eight verses, but again, I thought it would get draggy, so this time I made a short refrain that also serves to introduce the scale and style of the piece, and eases us into the Psalm. And the verses now contain two of the short verses, each.

So here is how we will do this one, maybe this week. They loved "Twelve Gates" a capella... maybe it does not need chords after all.

WE SHALL WALK THROUGH THE VALLEY
Music: Traditional (Spiritual); Words: Susan Hinton

INTRO & REFRAIN
We shall walk (through the valley)
We shall walk (in peace)
We shall walk through the valley in peace.

1. We shall rest in pastures of cool flowing green
We shall walk where the waters lie at ease.
If Jesus Himself shall be our leader...
We shall walk through the valley in peace.
We shall find our revival in the midst of trial,
We shall follow where He has helped us see.
If Jesus Himself shall be our leader...
We shall walk through the valley in peace.

REFRAIN

2. We shall walk through the valley and the shadow of death;
We shall not fear, but be released.
If Jesus Himself shall be our leader...
We shall walk through the valley in peace.
We shall know the mighty comfort of the rod and the staff
We shall know our Shepherd guards His least.
If Jesus Himself shall be our leader...
We shall walk through the valley in peace.

REFRAIN

3. We shall sit at His table though the wicked surround;
We shall join as heirs the heav'nly feast.
If Jesus Himself shall be our leader...
We shall walk through the valley in peace.
We shall fill with His Spirit till our cup run o'er,
We shall praise Him in songs that shall not cease.
If Jesus Himself shall be our leader...
We shall walk through the valley in peace.

REFRAIN

4. We shall walk in His footsteps and carry His cross
We shall show His lovingkindness and increase.
If Jesus Himself shall be our leader...
We shall walk through the valley in peace.
We shall reach the New Jerusalem and dwell there with Him;
We shall know neither west nor east.
If Jesus Himself shall be our leader...
We shall walk through the valley in peace.

REFRAIN (TWICE)

Susan, I'm a little confused. The words I have to this one in the 1975 Baptist Hymnal are a little different (from your first posting at the top). Do you want these words?

This makes a beautiful medley with "Precious Lord, Take My Hand."

Mary, I would love to see another version, and if it is the same title, this is exactly the place to post it.

BTW I found an online Baptist Hymnal site yesterday.... would that help? It was HERE.

WE SHALL WALK THROUGH THE VALLEY
words and music VALLEY, Anonymous

We shal walk thro' the valley in peace;
We shall walk thro' the valley in peace;
For Jesus himself will be our leader.
We shall walk thro' the valley in peace.

There will be no sorrow there;
There will be no sorrow there;
For Jesus himself will be our leader.
There will be no sorrow there.

We shall meet our loved ones there;
We shall meet our loved ones there;
For Jesus himself will be our leader.
We shall meet our loved ones there.

We shall meet our Savior there;
We shall meet our Savior there;
For Jesus himself will be our leader.
We shall meet our Savior there.

from 1975 Baptist Hymnal, #501

Susan, It's not on that sight since it's #501. Also, it's not in other versions of the Baptist Hymnal. The punctuation seems a little strange, but that's how it was

Thanks, Mary, it's a sight for sore eyes, cite and all, here in this site! *G*

There was a lot of crossover from black to white, white to black, in the times when these songs were born, and it's hard to say which came first. Also I wonder if the Baptists did what other denominations have done-- deliberately going after the inclusion of material from the Negro Spirituals tradition, in official hymnals, to make them work better for all parties. (See History of Spirituals thread, where that discussion more properly belongs, because there is a lot of info in that thread to consider.)

This song also represents the possibilities inherent in most of the spirituals, which is that one can take the general theme and create verses that go in any number of directions... the one you found is about salvation, whereas the one I created is about peace in troubled times, and the one I first posted seems to be about the hope of a better place. When they were first created, these spontaneously-created verses were how the songs came to be and how they continued... there was no thought that there should be an "official" version at all. They were "in the moment" and capable of evoking a wide range of responses from those who would sing them.

This song was among the repertoire of the [Fisk] Jubilee Singers.

WE SHALL WALK THRO' THE VALLEY

We shall walk thro' the valley and the shadow of death,
We shall walk thro' the valley in peace,
If Jesus Himself shall be our leader,
We shall walk thro' the valley in peace.

(Chorus)
We shall meet those Christians there, (meet them there,)
We shall meet those Christians there, (meet them there,)
If Jesus Himself shall be our leader,
We shall walk thro' the valley in peace.

There will be no sorrow there,
There will be no sorrow there,
If Jesus Himself shall be our leader,
We shall walk thro' the valley in peace.

(Chorus)
We shall, &c.

SOURCE: J.T.B. Marsh, The Story of the Jubilee Singers; With Their Songs, revised edition (1880; reprinted AMS, 1971), pp. 194-5. The words "We shall walk thro' the valley and the shadow of death" have obviously come from the 23rd psalm: "Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no eveil." If I remember correctly, Thomas Dorsey's "Peace in the Valley" is said to be based on ths song.

The Princely Singers version (in Wade In the Water, Volume I: African American Spirituals: The Concert Tradition, Smithsonian Folkways 40072) seems to be based on this. To hear part of it, click here. Another recording is by Chanticleer (WHERE THE SUN WILL NEVER GO DOWN, featuring many arrangements by Music Director Joseph Jennings, TELDEC 4509-90878-2). Both are sung very slowly.
